The opening day function on 17th November 1902
was almost exclusively a male gathering - and adult
males at that.  His Worship the Mayor of Auckland,
Sir John Logan Campbell set the wheels in motion on he first of six trams turned out for the occasion

By the mid 1920's the trams provided transport for the majority of Aucklanders.  Motor car numbers were growing
but car ownership still proved too costly for most.

The late lamented Auckland Tramway system died on the 29th December, 1956.   Thanks however to a dedicated group - The "OLD TIME TRANSPORT PRESERVATION LEAGUE" - a few precious trams survived and became the nucleus for WESTERN SPRINGS TRAMWAYS, at MOTAT.  Restored by many hard working volunteers, these operating units are MOTAT's greatest assets.

CENTENARY

The occasion was celebrated by a
GRAND PARADE OF TRAMS  on Sunday, 24th November 2002 and by a Dinner in the Colonial Arms fadjoining, for Western Springs Tramway Volunteers and friends, as well as for the Director and Staff

Tributes were paid to IAN STEWART as the "Father" of the Western Springs Tramway - and to all who had contributed so much over so many years
