1995-This was going to be the year. I went out and bought me on of those Mossberg 835's. I had prepared all through out the off season, buying video tapes, practicing my calls, scouting, etc. Opening day: I had a bird roosted from the night before, 100 yards BEHIND me, ( I did a fine job of roosting!) I called a few times and at fly down time this thing actually came to me. He lights up right behind the tree. I have my gun across my lap, pointing to the left (I'm a righty), a few seconds goes by and in the corner of my eye I see something standing 2' from me. I'm shaking like a dog _ _ _ _ ing peach seeds and this thing starts to run. Well, I let him have it. 3 shots of 3 1/2" went somewhere, just not at him! 2nd day: Well, after being mad at the world and myself from the 1st day, I decided that I was going to give it another try. I set up in a different location. Oh yeah, that roosting thing, you don't need to do that! At first light I'm set up listening to the birds ah chirpin and Gobbleeeee, 40 yards to my right! I "tree yelp" ( ha ha) & this big boy gobbles at me. Hey, I am the man today! He gobbled and gobbled for 40 minutes. Finally, he flys down and heads in the other direction, I yelp, he goes into strut and turns and heads towards me. The big boy gets 20 yards in front of me and of course I am as calm as I was the first day. I let him have it, BOOM, he flys straight up into the air and hits the ground runnin'! 2 birds, in 2 days and 2 misses. This really stinks!! No more chances the rest of the season. - May 18th. Mark and I were out driving around and we came upon a farmer that Mark knows (Greg). Well, Greg tells us about this turkey that he sets his watch by everyday, crosses the road every day at the same time, has a path 2' wide & is as tall as the window on his girlfriends car & has a foot long beard. Oh, I forgot to say that Greg was on a tractor, drinking a beer at 10:00 a.m. Mark and I are laughing the rest of the morning about this info that we received form Greg. We proceeded to hunt for an hour or so and came to the area that Greg told us about this monster of a bird. We get out of the truck, laughing and carrying on. We walk into the woods 35 yards off of the road. Mark calls, nothing. Mark tells me to call, I call and I'm motioning to Mark about the foot long beard and GOBBBLLEEEE, 45 yards in front of us. Well, we start to scamble, trying to put on our face masks and find a tree to set up against. Mark is 15 yards to my right and 15 seconds goes by and this bird appears. I swear on my daughters eyes that this thing is the tallest turkey that I have ever seen and his beard looks likes a rope swinging down. He is 20 yards right in front of me. I am as calm as the '95 season. If that barrel was steady in a 3" area, I would be surprised. Well, I let him have it. He flys straight up in the air, I shoot again. Mark finally sees him, he shoots, bird flys straight up into the air. Bird runs to my left, I shoot again. Mark shoots, the bird comes right at me. He is standing 10' in front of me. Mark yells," Tim shoot" I whine back, " I can't, I'm out of shells." Mark shoots, a little too close to me I might add. I yell at him. The bird he takes off running. All in all 6 shots of 835 fired and no bird. We were in complete coRnfusion. May 3rd- The DAY. I was up at 2:45 a.m. Nervous ,I guess. I hunted all morning at a couple of different locations with no luck. I decided that I was going to go behind the house and give it a try at 10:30.It was starting to get very dark, storm was moving in. I set up and made some calls and waited& waited. Thunder started to let loose. At 11:20, I let loose, cuttin' and yelpin'. I thought that I heard a bird gobble off in the distance. Called again, Gobbleeeee! He was coming. After a few minutes, I saw him coming in. He gobbled some more and went ino strut, spittin' & drummin'. He came in at about 10' in front of me, 1 eye closed, looking through my scope,& bingo there he is. BOOM! Dusted. He flew back probably 10' from the impact, flopping! I didn't know what to do, I jumped up, ran over, unloaded my gun, put another shell in. I was dumbfounded. I started to thank God & yelling and screamin'. There he was. My first turkey. 9 1/2" beard,1" spurs, approximately 20 lbs. I ran home with blood dripping all over my back from the quarter size hole in his head. The first thing that I do is call Mark. He too, shot his first that morning. A 9" bearded wonder. This is one of the most memorable days of my life. I finally did it & knowing that my best bud got his too makes this day all that more special! Please Hunt Safe! There are way TOO many want to be's out there that think they are above the rules. Good hunting. Cutt
