"Apple Dumplings"
1 1/2 Cups sugar 1 1/2 Cups water 1/4 teaspoon cinn. 6 to 10 drops of red food coloring 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
Combine sugar, water, cinn and food coloring; bring to boiling. Remove from heat; add butter.
2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup shortening 1/2 cup milk 6 medium apples, peeled and sliced thin
Combine dry ingredients, cut in shortening till mixture resembles course crumbs. Add milk all at once and stir just until flour is moistened.
On lightly floured surface, roll about 1/4 inch thick into 18x12-inch rectangle. Cut into 6 inch squares. Place sliced apples in each square. Sprinkle each generously with sugar, cinn, and dot with butter. Fold in corners to center and pinch edges together.
Place in 9x13 inch ungreased baking pan. Pour the syrup over dumplings; sprinkle with sugar.
Bake at 375 for 35 minutes, or until apples are done. Serve with milk or cream, or plain!!! Makes 6 servings.
Mine are usually done in 35 minutes and I use sugar VERY GENEROUSLY but, I would!!!
