Memphis -- Despite the disappointing loss to Utah in the Liberty Bowl, the 2003 season qualifies as a big success for a Southern Miss football program that had slipped into mediocrity the previous three years.
The Eagles overcame a slow start to finish the 2003 season with its fourth C-USA championship and a 9-4 record. The season didn't end on a good note but the prospects for 2004 are encouraging with so many experienced players returning. |
Southern Miss... Back On Top! |

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Michael Boley was supposed to blitz, but pulled up in a timely moment of recognition, poised to jump for the screen pass he suspected was coming his way.
"They ran the same play earlier in the game ... and threw it right by me," the Southern Mississippi linebacker recalled. "I just kind of stopped, got in the throwing lane and luckily he threw it to me."
Boley stretched for a two-handed grab and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, breaking open what would wind up a 31-10 Southern Miss victory over North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl on Tuesday night.
Boley, named MVP of the first bowl of the postseason, made eight tackles, including two sacks.
Dustin Almond threw for 247 yards. He had a touchdown pass and ran for another score in the opening quarter, giving Southern Miss an early lead it never relinquished in its first bowl victory in four years.
"We wanted to come out and make a statement on those opening drives," Almond said. "We kind of got in a rut there in the third quarter, but Boley made a big play and brought the momentum back. That gave the offense some confidence and we went out there and ran the football."
Southern Miss running back Anthony Harris had 104 yards on 14 carries, and USM finished with a 403-212 advantage in total yardage.

The Football Writers Association of America has named defensive back John Eubanks to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List for the 2005 season. Eubanks has garnered All-America attention throughout his career as a return specialist, but as a junior in 2004, he showed those same elite skills in the defensive backfield for the Golden Eagles. Eubanks earned first team All-Conference USA honors as a defensive back and was named as an honorable mention All-America selection by collegefootballnews.com and SI.com. |
The Mound Bayou, Miss., native finished second on the team with three interceptions in 2004, and led the Golden Eagle defense with nine pass breakups, finishing with 47 total tackles (31 solo, 16 assists), while also recovering a fumble. With Eubanks selection to the Watch List, this marks the fourth-consecutive preseason that a Southern Miss player has been nominated for the award. |
Eubanks named to Nagurski Watch List |
Since 1991, Southern Miss has toppled Alabama twice, plus Auburn, Georgia, Illinois (twice), Oklahoma State (twice), LSU, Nebraska and Virginia Tech. (These are all in the post-Brett Favre era, if you're wondering.)

Johnson Named To Ray Guy Award Watch List
Southern Miss senior punter Luke Johnson has been named to the 2005 Ray Guy Award watch list. Johnson was also named to the Ray Guy Award watch list last season.
Johnson, named to the American Football Coaches Association's Good Works Team in 2004, was one of 40 players selected to the Ray Guy Award watch list. The award, given to the top collegiate punter of the year, is presented by the Greater Augusta Sports Council.
The Soso, Mississippi native ranks second in school history, with a 42.1 yards per punt average. In the team's season opening game at Alabama, Johnson had the second best performance of his career, finishing with eight punts for 367 yards, averaging 45.9 yards per punt. |

Birmingham, AL - Southern Miss place-kicker Darren McCaleb needed less than three seasons to break a Golden Eagles career record that had stood for more than two decades.
McCaleb kicked a 47-yard field goal in the first quarter and added a 44-yarder in the fourth of the Golden Eagles' Conference USA game with UAB Friday night, giving him 42 field goals in his career.
That topped the mark set by Steve Clark from 1981-83. The 47-yarder kick was a season-long for McCaleb and matched a 47-yarder he kicked against Tulane in 2003.

Causey sidelined
USM senior tight end Pedi Causey did not play because of a pulled hamstring.
Causey, who started USM's opening game against Alabama, had been used primarily in two-tight end sets since then. |
Two in a row...for Damion
USM's Damion Carter juggled a pass before bringing it in for a 25-yard touchdown.
It was his first catch of the game, giving him 25-yard TD grabs on his last two catches. He had a 25-yard scoring catch with his last reception against Central Florida.
Carter's catch gave USM a 10-0 lead for a third consecutive game. |
