The Asian American Women's Coalition (AAWC) is a multi-cultural group dedicated to the concerns of all Asian American Women. The AAWC was formed in 1987, as the result of a very successful collaboration of the community and the Balch Institute of Ethnic Studies to sponsor the exhibit, "Chinese Women of America 1834-1982".
AAWC's members include women from all professions and walks of life. One of our founding members is the first female Asian American Judge in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The other founder is the Director Emeritus of the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation.
Through its history, the organization has spearheaded numerous activities for the Asian American community. Some of our recent activities include: contributing to the children's collection of the Independence Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, providing an open forum for Asian American students to discuss the challenges they face, raising awareness of the Dragon Boat Festival to target local Asian youth, partnering with Methodist Hospital for our annual holiday party for needy children, and holding yearly banquets to support our Scholarship Fund. AAWC co-sponsored with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Women's Development Institute International, the exhibit, "Comfort Women - Now and Then - From Exploration to Empowerment."
In 1995, AAWC established the Cecilia Moy Yep Scholarship Fund to assist financially disadvantaged Asian American female students to advance themselves in their chosen field of endeavor. In 1996, AAWC celebrated their tenth anniversary and awarded their first scholarship. There are currently 28 college students being assisted by AAWC and over 20 have received one year financial awards.
Please click on "Scholarship Application" for the 2008 Cecilia Moy Yep Scholarship information. Complete applications must be received on March 31, 2008 (If mailed, must be postmarked by March 29, 2008). Our 2008 scholarship dinner moves to Friday, June 20th Future details will follow.
