The Circumnavigators Club is the only organization devoted to bringing together those men and women who have circumnavigated the globe. It was organized in 1902 when two Americans, Joe D. Morrison and James H. Birch, sailing across the Indian Ocean aboard the S.S. Barbarossa, dicussed their good fortune to have gone around the world. They decided that there was need for a club composed of those adventurous individuals who had actually experienced the ultimate experience of travel. On their return to New York, they were joined by world traveler Edward H. Patterson and the Club was founded. These founders are known as the Club's "Three Immortals." |

Heritage In those days, global travel was arduous and expensive and few were priviledged to experience it. Small wonder then that most of the Club's early members were famous, or associated with exploratory, military or diplomatic assignments. The club's roster of early member is liberally sprinkled with such legendary figures as William Jennings Bryan, who presented to the Club a whale's tooth gavel which is traditionally handed down from Club president to president as a symbol of authority and prestige; Presidents Herbert Hoover and William Howard Taft; Generals John J. Pershing and Douglas MacArthur; Admirals Robert E. Peary and Richard E. Byrd; John Philip Sousa, who wrote the Circum- navigators Club March; William F. Cody " Buffalo Bill"; and magician Harry Houdini. With the advent of air travel, the world came within reach of increasing numaber of travelers. Althouh our Club roster continues to include a number of celebrities such as Sir Edmund Hillary, Thor Heyerdahl, Singapore business leader Lien Ying Chow, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Sally Ride, Titanic Discoverer Dr. Robert D. Ballard, the Club's members today come from all walks of life. |

Purpose The Club's purpose is to encourage global felloship and understanding. It strives to inspire people to see and absorb as much as they can about the word in which we live. It is devoted to providing those who have circumnavigated the globe with a forum for intellectual exchange. Above all, the Clubs's purpose is "Through Friendship, To Leave This World A Little Better Than We Found It." |
Awards Because the Club places such high value on the significance of global travel and exploration, an award was created to give recognition to those who have made a significan contribution to the world understanding. Konwn as the Order of Magellan, this award is conferred periodically at black-tie dinner. |

It was a lovely evening at the Princton Club in Manhattan. About 80 people showed up to honor Hugh Downs who had recently joined the Club. Just as you imagine when you see Hugh with Barbara on your TV screen, Hugh is a lovely gentleman, kind and friendly and a wonderful speaker who kept everyone spellbound just listening to him. What a brilliant man! |
