Computing, audio and image editing, music, synths, midi, writing, history (American, Asian, Japanese, Diplomatic, Music, Naval, and Military), research, and information gathering, traveling. I am also involved in research on the early Japanese Navy (1890-1922). I am a fanatic about Duane Allman, and have a digital collection of concerts with the Allman Brothers (1969-1971). I have also converted a collection of tapes of the Gabriel-era Genesis (1970-1975). I have finished other Allmans--ask me about what I have for 1990-1997. The digital project preserves the audio tapes from further degradation. Ask me too about the Black Crowes, Warren Haynes, the Rolling Stones, and, Rick Wakeman. Presently, I "own and operate" PNGuinn Productions, and East-West Studios, a computer based (and distributed) facility out of Coronado, California. I have converted video to DVD (the ABB, Focus, Genesis, Rolling Stones, Grand Funk Railroad, Rick Wakeman, Yes). Ask me about the work.
I have released several compact discs of mainly original noise-"Loses His Mind", "Shaken, Stirred, and On the Rocks", "Selfish Portrait of Stilled Life", "Criminal Conversation", "Know Evil", "No Tattoo on this Bacchante?", "...laughing and crying, you know it's the same release", "An Ill Wind Blows...", "In the Garden of Beautiful Lies", "Know Evil I", "Leftovers from Pamdora's Lunchbox", "Half Life: An American in Piraeus", "Too Fazes of Layla", "Alexander the Great Reflects upon the Folly of his Youth", "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man", "Pre-Rafaelite", "A Life in the Day?", "Practical Obscurity". Stay tuned to this page for additional releases. I have also completed a related multimedia project, first begun in 1987. The self-produced soundscapes are influenced by Rick Wakeman, Larry "Synergy" Fast, Vangelis, Peter Gabriel, Dead Can Dance, Kitaro, Mike Oldfield, Lorenna McKennitt, etc., etc. I combine East and West, through electronic and acoustic, and Old World/New World influences & sounds. You can reach me at rivera.3@osu.edu (forwarded), or, carlosofcoronado@netscape.net, if you are interested in the works, which are not for sale, (but distributed freely). For more about the discs and the tracks plus new materials, go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/carlosofcoronado |

Hi, I am Carlos of Coronado, (a.k.a. Carlos R. Rivera, A.A., B.A., MA., Ph.D., & LCDR USNR-ret)
I enlisted in the US Navy back in 1980 after Jimmy Carter forgot the Soviets were bad actors. Later I served as a SWO (Surface Warfare Officer). I lived in Coronado (1981 to 1984, 1999).
I served on USS Rogers DD-876 as First LT, then on USS Decatur DDG-31 as COMM Officer, and on USS Gray FF-1054 as COMM Officer. I later also served as a Selected Reserve officer (SELRES), doing a tour as Asst OPS on USS Lang FF-1060, then in NCSO (SFCA) and later in MSC (SFCA) and then finished in the IRR, retiring in 2004. |
Coronado: The arrow marks the spot. Beyond it you can see the waters of both San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. You can also almost see the studio from this view, and say hello to KMJ. |
The earliest existing photograph of Carlos of Coronado in Coronado. This was taken in Spring 1981 at "baby" SWOS, NAB Coronado. A "pre-Renaissance" man in paradise. |

I am an professional Historian "communing" physically and mentally between Coronado and Central Ohio, with a sideline of music creation using computers. I am not, however, a professionaIly trained musician at all--IT'S JUST A VERY EXPENSIVE HOBBY. I also am starting to do work with multimedia platforms. Ask me what I can do with software, including Cubase, Cakewalk, Cool Edit, DVDshrink, Adobe Premiere Pro, and DVD Movie Factory, among others. My setup includes (and has included): Korg DSS-1, Yamaha FB-01, Casio CZ-101, Yamaha acoustic guitar, steel and glass slides, some percussion, a Commodore 64 PC, 2 Powerspec PCs (P4 3ghz, 1g ram, Audigy Platinum 2 card, 200 gb HDD, USB2 and Firewire) (AMD 233mhz, 128mb ram, 30gb hdd, Ovation soundcard), and, a custom-built PC (PIII 933 mhz, 700mb ram, 140gb hdd, a Soundblaster Audigy Platinum card, Firewire & USB 2, DV-R, CDR, dual boot with Win98 and WinXP). Nearly everything is produced in the digital domain. Most of the work so far has been based upon historical themes drawn from Ancient Greece (myths, legends, and literature), and modern literature.
I received my doctorate from the Ohio State University in 1995. My major fields (including my BA, Columbus College, Georgia, 1978, and MA, Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, 1988) were in Naval and Military History, American Diplomatic, and Japanese History. I served a "tour" as the military historian at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, Ohio, from 1995-1999, and also have taught history at the Ohio State University-Columbus since 1991, and at the OSU-Marion/Delaware Center since Fall 2003. I will be at the Delaware Center for the academic year 2008-2009.
I am revising "Big Stick and Short Sword: The American and Japanese Navies as Hypothetical Enemies before 1922". I have also lectured/presented on the Japanese/American Navies (and History) at the U.S. Naval Academy, Ohio State University, the Great Northern Plains History Conference, the Ohio Valley History Conference, Yale University, Alma College, Otterbein College, the Benjamin Franklin Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Mid-America History Conference, and the Society for Military History, among others.
I am also the "author" of "In the Shadows of Coronado: Life Stories in Mystery and Practical Obscurity" an auto/biographical project in several parts with a story of nearly 400 pages, May 2007.
