When I first got my computer in May of 1998 and started surfing around for F-106 display photos, I found only one on the Wright Patterson AFB page! I decided to find out how many F-106s really were on display and where they were at. Then I was going to publish their photos. Heck, there couldn't be that many on display and besides, how hard could that be? I'd just email a couple buddies and I'd be done in a couple of weeks. Right??? Well------- let me tell you, this has and continues to be a real adventure. .
After I got a few photos I contacted Pat McGee at Pat's World to see if he'd like to add my display photos to his website and he did a super job with publishing his "Still Serving" page. A lot of my research is published there and I'll be linking to it extensively. Hopefully, I'll be able to expand his published information on this website with new additional information as it becomes available.
"What kind of adventure?", did I hear you ask? Well, chasing down tail numbers for one thing. Static displays are anything but static. Just because an aircraft is mounted on a stick doesn't mean that is where it stays! I was amazed to find "Vertical Tape" tail numbers painted on "Round Eye" airframes, and vice-versa. For example, one 59 model "Vertical Tape" on a stick in New York had been taken down, wings taken off, trucked to Montana, put back together, painted in new squadron colors, and two 57 model "Round Eye" tail numbers applied; one to the right side and one to the left side of the tail! That one really had me going for a while! I thought I was dealing with three aircraft on that research only to find out there was only one - but a very nice looking one! ( I even drove from Colorado to Montana to check that one out! )
Below are thumbnails of all 24 display F-106s on exhibit around the country. Anyone is welcome to contribute photos, stories, history, etc., on these 24 SURVIVORS.
