Can you distinguish between truth and lies? What if someone told you that you are actually an "intergalactic ranger?"

Continue in prayer, and
watch in the same with
thanksgiving; Withal
praying also for us, that
God would open unto
us a door of utterance,
to speak the mystery of
Christ, for which I am

may make it manifest,
as I ought to speak.
Walk in wisdom toward

Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?
All with a little bit of Buzz Lightyear?
Who the HECK do I think I am!?!
(or why the negative portion of this of site even exists)

Curse me, hate me . . . but don't hate me
because I am telling you the Truth.
Get mad, but KNOW the TRUTH.

I get a lot of e-mails that assure me that I am the antichrist, that I'm going to hell, that I'm judging men better than myself who perform miracles and bring people to Christ, that I ought to be ashamed of myself, that I don't know Christ, and etc., and a few more etcs. Others say that the "Holy Ghost" has tried desperately to reach me, but that I grieved the "Ghost" by not speaking in Tongues, that I am lost because I have rejected my "prayer language."
Another poor young wretch, after telling me that he "speaks positivity" whenever he cuts his finger, and that sometimes the finger heals instantly while other times it just takes a little while -- when I told him I didn't believe that was true, he assured me I was just plain ole stupid. And the anointed guru who "teaches" him these things was a far, far better man than me.
Sometimes I have to wince and wring my hands before I even open an e-mail, sometimes I worry and fret that perhaps this site should not even exist (at least the negative portion), because it is definitely on the negative side and distinctly draws more response from negative people than positive (at least the portion of this site that addresses the false teachers and deceivers and my personal collision with the most evil religious movement in operation today, or perhaps in history)...
...but then again, every now and then, perhaps every two weeks or so, I get an e-mail from a person who says: "Hey, thanks, I found some information that really helped" or "...you know, something just didn't seem quite right about that preacher man, and then I found your site and my eyes opened" or "...my family had been judging me for years because I wouldn't participate in all that stuff, and now I know there was a real reason" and "...this is important, keep up the good work..."
This second kind of letter I think of as "Honey from God," that people, who don't know me, without any kind of prodding or request, actually reach out to reassure me, to encourage and edify and strengthen and bring a smile to my lips. God is reaching out through these people, to say: "No, don't get discouraged, just keep plugging away."
Plug, de-plug, plug PLUG.
The first group? No, I don't think the devil is reaching out to me through these angry, bitter e-mailers (at least not in all cases), but what I do feel this could be a true symptom of -- a harbinger of dangerous things just below the surface -- is the fact that tradition is almost impossible to break. If someone I trust teaches me that tennis shoes are really all about holding sugar and salt, and I believe it, and practice it, what do you think I'm going to feel, at a deep level, when I actually witness a brother or a sister wearing tennis shoes? The audacity! The foolishness! Don't they know the truth? Is there any hope for them, or are they lost for eternity? How filthy, tennis shoes on the feet -- that's going to contaminate the sugar and the salt! How smelly! How grossly absurd.
A new age buzz phrase of this phenomenon is called getting a check in my spirit, or "a check in the spirit." (It's usually followed closely by the age-old: "The check is in the mail!")
If you have been taught falsehood, and then hear the authentic truth, you do not recognize it as such (you reject the truth). You believe "truth" to be "falsehood." And it is an effective proofing process against truth, it is nearly impossible to break through. With men, it is practically impossible, but with God, thank God, absolutely nothing is impossible. There is hope. Don't give up (I keep telling myself).
In the movie Toy Story, the cowboy toy Woody attempts to get through to Buzz Lightyear, trying to convince him that he, Buzz, is actually a TOY, not a space ranger. Buzz is convinced that the health of the entire galaxy rests on his small, yet stout, plastic shoulders.
Woody, in exasperation, finally explodes: "You are a toy! You are a child's toy! An action figure! A child's plaything!!!"
Buzz, with the confidence of "knowing the truth" (that he is actually a space ranger, NOT a toy), shakes his head sadly at Woody and replies in a way we have all heard those lost in cults reply:
"You are a sad, strange little man!"
Woody knows that he, himself, is a toy. He knows that Buzz is a toy, just a fancier toy than himself. But Buzz feels that Woody is delusional, a pitiful and pathetic case of unenlightenment. Woody, on the other hand, cannot believe that Buzz is THAT stupid, to believe himself an actual cosmic hero, that the toy light mounted on Buzz's forearm is actually a deadly laser, that Buzz is on a mission to save the galaxy!
When Buzz learns the horrific truth (he sees himself, Buzz Lightyear, in a kid-savvy work of advertising, displayed as a "non-flying toy," with all his pat phrases spouting whenever a child presses his bright plastic buttons) he still cannot bring himself to believe it, that he is in fact, nothing more than a child's action figure (desperately, he wants to be MORE, he has to, just has to be MORE). It requires one last terrible thing, one last horrible truth that most people must experience before escaping the preposterous "truths" of mind-control cults, one last "leap of faith" for Buzz to accept the truth of his reality. For him to understand the truth of his humble reality.
He has to FALL.
On the second-floor landing Buzz perches on a stairway railing, and spouts his power mantra: "To infinity, and beyond!" And then Buzz makes his leap of faith, and sails -- for a brief instant -- into his destiny. Poor Buzz is a toy, not a space ranger, and he falls, he falls a long while and way, and when he abruptly meets the reality of the wooden floor, Buzz breaks, as all toys do, as all toys have always done (and sadly, as all humans do, and must do).
Buzz then goes through a period of self-loathing, depression, even a binge of Darjeeling tea guzzling. Buzz has learned the truth, and can hardly cope. To imagine yourself godlike, a space ranger traveling the galaxy, protecting the universe from the evil Emperor Zurg, and to learn, ultimately, that you are worthless plastic, something that a child toys with for a while, and ultimately throws away. Walking garbage. Who could survive such a revelation, hardly poor Buzz Lightyear.
But Woody offers Buzz some dazzlingly good news, it ain't all over, in fact, it is MUCH BETTER to be a child's toy, than it is to be a space ranger! Because you are Andy's toy, that makes you special, because Andy loves you! Isn't that great news? You are beloved, Buzz!
Buzz comes around, accepting his spot in the body of Andy's toys, and he and Woody become great friends. Like brothers.
Now the fact remains that Woody, himself, was hardly perfect. He was an aging cowboy toy, replaced by a plastic glow-in-the-dark space ranger, and Woody didn't like it. He was jealous of Andy's attention for Buzz. He wanted to serve Buzz his papers, in this case the truth of Buzz's toyhood, in order to bring Buzz down a peg or two. The fact was, Woody and Buzz, despite their different technologies, their different fun aspects for Andy, both of them ARE toys, plain and simple, and when they accept their respective destinies, they can work together in happiness, supporting each other and the other toys.
But Buzz was a real problem, in the beginning, in that he didn't know the truth, and yet he thought he did. He thought Woody and the other toys were beneath him, because he was godlike in comparison to them, he was a real space ranger (he fully believed) and yet that was far from the case. Buzz DID NOT KNOW THE TRUTH.
Buzz was ready to go next door and teach that monstrous toy-torturing boy Sid a thing or two about being nice to toys, and yet the sad fact was that Buzz stood not a hope of teaching Sid anything, because Buzz was not what he thought he was. He was not a great cosmic hero, he was a toy. Buzz could only serve his purpose when he knew the truth of what he was, a child's plaything, created for the joy of the child.
Buzz was LOST. He did not know or accept the TRUTH. Buzz was lost, and it took a great fall, for Buzz to be found. And part of this healing process for Buzz was in helping all the other toys.
How could Woody REACH Buzz with the truth? The sad fact is, Woody couldn't. The more he told Buzz the truth, the more Buzz despised and looked down on Woody. And this was not even because Buzz was evil, or even stupid -- it was his programming. He had been programmed to believe he was superior, to not only toys, but to humans themselves, the very beings that created Buzz!
It is sad, but true, that Buzz could never accept the truth of his reality until he saw that vision from humans, which aptly and succinctly revealed Buzz for what he actually was -- a money-making scam. Buzz hated to learn that all his great faith in his programming was nothing more than greed, for parents to sow their seeds for a great Buzz Lightyear harvest to please their children. What a terrible thing to learn.
Buzz hardly survived the "revelation."
It is the same with people, they are programmed to reject the truth and call it falsehood, and their programming demands that their falsehood is the one and only truth, and that all others are lost. And even more tragically, the programming that ensares so many people, is generally based on greed. To make money, the toymakers carefully orchestrate and advertise their new and improved New Age Harvest Method, you send in your seeds of love (big money) and get back a huge harvest (bigger money) which you can then send back in as seed for an even bigger harvest! And on top of this money-making scheme, the brainwashed cult member is taught that they are in fact a space ranger -- well, actually, what they believe is WORSE, that in fact they are gods (always stipulated, with a little "g"), and that they have special powers and abilities that make them special, more special than the unwashed toys about them.
When, and if, these deluded, denuded people learn the actuality, the awful truth of their situation and their sad relation to reality, they can hardly cope. Most give up on God completely, considering Him to be a part of the false teacher and cult leader's deception. As in the movie "The Matrix," people do not wish to wake up to the awful truth that they are humble, mere humans, feeding a great machine the energy it demands, that they are hosts for energy vampires; that humans are poor, worthless batteries -- most people would rather stay in the illusionary and delusional fairytale world of "The Matrix," even though it is not true, it is a complete alien fabrication. Most people would far rather live a lie, than accept the humbling truth (and tragically, MANY, after escaping the lie into liberating reality, give up, they, like dogs, return to their vomit -- they beg to be reinserted into "The Matrix," and the machines gladly comply).
A very good example of this happening outside of a cartoon movie for children, in actual history, with real people, is the friendship of two unlikely and famous men, one brilliant man by the name of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the fictional deductive sleuth Sherlock Holmes, and Eric Weiss, otherwise known as Harry Houdini the Master Magician (equally brilliant to Doyle).
Houdini traveled the world proving "spirit mediums" as charlatans and cheaters, liars and fakers, people making tons of money off poor, sad people who had lost loved ones in the First World War (and the spiritists and mediums grew to hate Houdini with such a passion, because he told the truth, and they at some level knew that what they were involved in was not truth). In the late 1800s and early 1900s spiritualism and spiritism was all the rage, mediums and channelers were popping up everywhere, and Houdini, time and time again, proved them liars, fakers and cheaters.
Arthur Conan Doyle, on the other hand, became a believer in spiritualism, feeling it to be the New Revelation for all religions, proof that there is "new life" on the other side of death, and that dead people can easily communicate with friends and family on this side of the great divide (if someone is open to their loving communication). Each famous and brilliant man fully believed himself to be right, to hold and know the truth, both believed themselves rational and logical; both thought themselves enlightened, whereas their opposite walked in darkness.
The irony here is that many, if not most Christians would side with Conan Doyle! Think about it, "Houdini" was Jewish, and if they could forgive him that, then there is the stumbling block of his profession, that of professional magician! Conan Doyle on the other hand, was a Christian (somewhat, somewhen, though he tended to switch back and forth between Christianity and atheism)! He sported a refined moustache, wore stylish tweed clothes, and drank hoity toity English breakfast teas from delicate bone china cups. And most Christians today harbor beliefs about "death and the bright light" not too different than that of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle!
Houdini and Conan Doyle were great friends, and admired each other greatly, and practiced walking on tippy-toes around each other on the subject of spiritualism. Houdini felt poor Conan Doyle was deceived and Conan Doyle pitied Houdini because he was not enlightened to a new and improved truth. Houdini operated from a superior intellect and demanded proof for his beliefs, and Conan Doyle, equally brainy, felt that he possessed hard proof for the continued existence of the soul, and couldn't understand why someone as pragmatic, logical and brazenly intelligent as Houdini could not climb on the seance bandwagon.
Retaining their friendship, Conan Doyle became a great evangelist for spiritualism, feeling it was his great destiny to bring this "truth" to the masses, a truth to unite pagan and Christian, Catholic and Eastern religions into one pure religion, fully believing this was TRUTH -- all the while Houdini continued tirelessly in proving every medium he encountered a charlatan, a rogue, and a false teacher. Conan Doyle felt Houdini would be the perfect champion if he would only open his eyes and come over to spiritualism, and Houdini felt if he could only shed light on enough of the leading proponents of spiritualism, prove them to be hoaxsters, that Conan Doyle would come back to his reason -- poor Conan Doyle went so far overboard that he even championed a set of photographs taken by little girls which "proved" the existence of fairies, photographs which viewed in the enlightenment of a new "special effects" age are obviously the cheesy shenanigans of little girls (newspapers around the world wondered if Sherlock Holmes had lost his mind) (the movies "Photographing Fairies" depicts some of these historical facts, and "Fairy Tale: A True Story" shows some of the conflict between Houdini and Conan Doyle, but both movies put a fantastic slant on the happenings, that fairies are real, and Houdini, poor soul, just couldn't open his eyes to the "truth" -- in all actuality, the little girls later admitted it was a joke, an intended harmless prank and they never imagined it could get so far out of hand, that famous people would take up their "cause" and exploit the bogus photographs to the whole world as "truth").
Both Conan Doyle and Houdini were atheists (though Conan Doyle would develop a sense of "god," due to his belief in spirits), non-Christian, and both were dealing in the realm of subjective fact, qualified truth -- neither considered what the Bible had to say about these dealings. The Bible clearly and redundantly states that the dead know nothing, that the thoughts of the living perish with the expiration of the last breath, that the dead has nothing more to do with the living, that all of their hate, love, fear, hopes and dreams vanish, that they do not go on, that the human body DOES NOT possess an "immortal soul." The Bible even states that the dead do not praise God, that they have no memory and that they have absolutely no idea what is happening here on Earth among the living. And yet spiritualism teaches just the opposite, and it has entered the mainline body of Christianity -- it has always been in Catholicism, but more and more Christian "teachers" are claiming that when you die that "thou shalt not surely die" (hmmm, I wonder who first said that?).
Though atheist, Houdini argued on the side of the Bible, even though he admitted that he would love to find evidence that life goes on, that our dead are always around us, happy and comforting -- he desperately desired a "word" from his dearly departed mother; knowing this, Arthur Conan Doyle's wife took up pen and paper, and before the very eyes of Houdini, declared that the disembodied spirit of Houdini's mother was ready to communicate. Houdini, disbelieving and crestfallen, mortified that his good friend's wife was forcing this issue, nodded his head and allowed the "channel from the spirit world" to take place.
Mrs. Doyle began to write, first drawing the sign of the cross (apparently to show that this was a "good" spirit, a proof of the benign communication), and then she commenced to fill page after page while Houdini sat watching, not speaking, preparing himself for the confrontation. The "confrontation" when the last jot of the pen was finished, has been described differently by both sides; Houdini claims that he was pleasant and listened to the reading of the alleged message from his mother, and he thanked Mrs. Doyle and expressed the opinion that he did not think it was a communication from his mother; Arthur Conan Doyle, on the other hand, claims that Houdini was moved by the message, wept, and gave them heart-felt thanks for this proof of the continued existence of the soul.
The truth is probably somewhere in between. Houdini probably was moved at the loving and consoling "message," and he was probably just as moved that Mrs. Doyle was so very sincere in her "gift" to Houdini. But Houdini later wrote that he never even remotely considered this "channeling" to be a message from his mother. He offered many proofs, first that his mother was never Christian and would not have offered the "sign of the cross," and furthermore that his mother was Hungarian and did not speak English, and the communication was entirely delivered in English, and on and on, that there was absolutely no way that this was a message from his mother, neither in style nor in offered facts. Conan Doyle was outraged and claimed that Houdini was pig-headedly lying through his teeth, stubbornly refusing to admit to the truth of the situation, and to the greater truth of an immortal soul, which he believed his wife had overwhelmingly proved.
But if you take the Bible for TRUTH, you know it is not true. The Bible explicitly states that the living are not to attempt to communicate with the dead, because there very well might be real communication, though it will not be with the spirits of dead people. It will be with spirits, but they have never been nor will ever be human. They are fallen angels, beings of vast intellect and amassed knowledge from experience, beings who have observed all of Earth's histories, have looked into the eyes of all the world's greatest minds, and have come up with some foolproof plans to prove that the devil "don't even be existin' let alone be a danger!" That was probably his best trick, to misquote Baudelaire, and Kaiser Sozie from "The Usual Suspects."
So how does Harry Houdini EVER get through to Arthur Conan Doyle? Both men care deeply for the other, and yet they both cannot be right, they both cannot possess truth. People who lean toward Conan Doyle feel that Harry Houdini is himself a fraud, a liar, an antichrist.
The ultimate problem is, when someone has been deceived, when they have accepted absurd "facts" as Truth, it is almost impossible to break through those bars of deceit. Like Buzz Lightyear, the little plastic toy of a person goes on believing he is a god, all-powerful, and nothing short of a great fall will wake them up. Especially when people have invested their time and money into these false teachers and falser prophets. The false teacher and falser prophets are liars, certainly, but the only greater liars are those that they have deceived. As the magician/bamboozler-exposer Amazing Randi said, quoting Benjamin Franklin:

"There are no greater liars in the world
than quacks — except for their patients."

THINK about that. It's pretty bad when a doctor lies to his patient. But if the patients buys into the lie of the doctor, the patient then becomes an even worse liar, as he lies to himself every second to convince himself what the quack has quacked is true! And THAT is what the false "anointed gurus" are "teaching," at this very moment, that you have to "talk yourself into it," that you can "talk and create," that God spoke and created and you too are a "god" (with a little "g" of course) and can create by speaking. That even if it is not true, speak it, believe it, and then stand in faith, and it will BE TRUE. Thus if I say there is a million dollars in my hand, and of course there isn't a million dollars in my hand right now, if I just keep saying it and believing it, I will ultimately make myself believe it, and it will be TRUE.
Can't you see, that is all a lie? Make-believe? The stupidest of deceptions? And yet the quack isn't the greatest liar, it is the deceived one, who because they do not love the truth have been given over to deception, THEY are the greatest liar!
How DOES Houdini ever break through the iron cage of deceite wherein Conan Doyle is trapped?
But that's the position I find myself in, that I must attempt to warn people away from spiritualism masquerading as Christianity. Teachings so far outside of the Bible that they are closer to a horror show pulp magazines than inspired scripture. I witness popular Word-Faith preachers shouting and dancing, screaming and chortling, all the while preaching messages from Wicca, from Wizardry 101, from Spiritualism and spiritism, cursing the "spirit of pimples" out there in TeeVeeland, claiming that God has anointed them and that they come in the "name of Christ."
What am I supposed to do? Should I keep silent, because they are saying: "Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ!" when their fruit proves them profaners and frauds and liars and swindlers? Quacks of the worst order! Spiritual Quacks.
When a Word-Faith "teacher" admits that if your pastor knew what he was teaching you that "them boys would crucify me!" and then further goes on to "teach" that you need to "talk to the tumor, you don't need to bring it up to God again, cuz He's already released a puff a'power and now you gotta stand in faith -- don't talk to God, talk to the tumor, rebuke it!"
The spirit of witchcraft is alive and thriving in the "Christian" church today. "You got power!" they promise. "You got authority!" they swear.
You are special, you are better than those horrible pagans around you, you got de Spirit! You gonna be rich! You gonna rule the world!
Your power and authority are absolutely nothing, while the authority of Jesus the Christ, Yahshua Messiah, IS EVERYTHING.
Spiritualism is here, today, in most branches of the Christian Church, deeper than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle could have hoped. If Houdini were alive today he would be completely baffled at how far and how successfully it has penetrated into a group of rationally minded people. The New Age Movement now calls itself the "Charismatic Movement" and "Word-Faith Movement." And in many, many cases, Pentacostalism.
Do I think that people involved in the Charismatic Movement are evil devil worshippers? No, I don't, at least not as a whole, and definitely not individually, per se -- many inadvertently slip into pagan practices that God calls abomination (just think of the number of "Christians" with ham on their breath, smacking their lips and shouting: "Praise the Lord!"). Do I think there are "saved" brothers and sisters in the "Word of Faith" deluge? Yes, I do, without doubt. Do I know anyone in this deadly movement? Yes, and some of them are the sweetest-hearted people, some of them are bursting with love -- and the Bible makes it amply clear, if you gotta-gotta-lotta whatever, but you ain't gotta LOVE, then you ain't gotta nothing, no how. Love covers over a multitude of sins. I believe it. I fully believe that there will be Charismatics in heaven, even some that practice the worst abominations. Who knows, maybe even Rod Parsley will be there! With God all things are possible!
What about Pentacostals, is there hope for them, are they saved, aren't thy even more dangerous than Charismatics?
Here's the thing: it doesn't matter what group you belong to, there is absolutely NO SALVATION in groups. Salvation comes through attaching yourself to God. Salvation is having a personal, knowing relationship, of your own free will, with Jesus, the Son of God, God in the flesh, the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world, our saving connection to Yahweh -- anyone, high or low, that believes in Him and His promises will receive the gift of eternal life. All others? The Bible says that they will perish. Thus it follows that if you have a relationship with God, you can very well be a "saved" Catholic, you can very well attend a falling on the floor gibbering slavering "Holy Ghost partying" Charismatic "Harvest-style" church, and you can be saved, safe in the arms of God, held in His hands.
IF YOU ABIDE IN CHRIST.
A Jehovah's Witness can go to heaven, just like an Independent Southern-Fried Baptist, just like a Presbyterian or a Mormon or a Seventh-day Adventist or Lutheran, Messianic Jew or Yawehist, Methodist or even a Seventh-Day Baptist, etc., etc., etc. -- we are NOT saved by what group or club we belong to; we ARE saved through our living connection to the Living God, the Father of Lights, the Creator of Heaven and Earth.
All churches have truth, yes, the Mormons do, the Jehovah's Witnesses do, Catholics and Presbyterians and Baptists and Charismatics and yes even Buddhists, Hindus and MUSLIMS. As should be more than obvious, some churches have more truth than do others -- the question comes down to who do ya believe, why ya believe it, and what kind of traditions are slowing you down or speeding you up? A Hank Hanegraaff will say, over and over and over again, that you have to get on the shoulders of the giants that have passed before you, that you need dat Historical Christian Orthodox Tradition and his phone lines are open, available and ready to take your credit card numbers, it was good enough for yer pappy and it'd better be good enou' for ye! And there might even be some truth in his money-making song and dance cheerleading routine.
Of course, Hank should be a Catholic, with that logic, and who knows, give him five or six years, and he very well might become Friar Hank, the Catholic Answer Man! Because who has the longest track record, who has the most shoulders to stand upon, who has the nod of almost two thousand years?
But tradition, no matter how big or great them shoulders be, does not save. It doesn't matter what club you are a member, it is Who you follow, it is Who you worship -- the Great I Am, the Alpha and the Omega, or some guy with bad hair who drawls in southern-fried smarminess: "Boy howdy, I'm anointed and you can trust me!"
The thing of it is, as God works in you, your spiritual eyes begin to open, warning bells start to jangle, and as you read His Word you realize, deeply, that God is not a God of confusion, He is a God of peace, and love, and hope, and joy, and ORDER. And YES, we can know God's order, He presents it to us in His Word. He gives clear rules, commandments, practices and directions, all at the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. To say otherwise is to conclude that maybe God doesn't know everything, or that at best He changes His mind, frequently. He claims He doesn't change -- do you think He is a liar? And if He is a liar, can you trust Him? He says He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow -- do you think He fibs just a little?
I don't. I believe Him. The Old Testament is just as valid as the New Testament, they are one Bible, and neither contradicts the other. Do current revelations contradict older ones? Not true ones, that is for certain. You can depend on the Word of God, and God is not a man that he should lie, or trip, or mistakenly say this, or change His mind on that . . . wicked people do all these things, not God. God IS the same yesterday as today as tomorrow -- the "Old Testament God" is the very same as the "New Testament God."
Do we keep the commandments to be saved? Absolutely not. Do we stop drinking booze to be saved? Absolutely not.
(Psst. Hold on, here comes the however)
However, when we receive Jesus, when we open that door that He has been knocking on all our lives, and the Holy Spirit comes flooding in, and our body is changed into the Temple of the Holy Spirit -- we supernaturally begin to act differently, think differently, behave differently, DESIRE differently, speak differently -- not through gritting our teethsies and clenching our fisties and stamping our footsies, but SUPERNATURALLY, apart from our own efforts. Okay, that was a little redundant, don't you think?
When God says "I find this thing to be an abomination" and He is the same yesterday as He is today, we know He doesn't change His mind, then BELIEVE Him, with your new spiritually renewed mind, IT IS STILL AN ABOMINATION. If you think God changed His mind about pork being a good food choice, then you haven't read what the Bible has to say about it (you have been innundated with what "the new and improved traditions of the newer elders" have to say about it, NOT what the Bible itself says).
But let me restate it: it is God working in us, through us, that changes us. Most of the time we aren't even aware of the Potter's fingers molding us, the clay. And we can even fight that change if we elect to, we can thwart God's purpose in us, and eventually, through our own free will, we can REJECT God even after we have accepted Him. If you don't believe this, you haven't read Jesus' parable about the seeds that fall on different ground. What we first receive with joy, when trouble comes, we can freely reject in anger, or boredom, or fear. So, on the other hand, we can aid God in His work, we can allow God to work through us to CHANGE US. And this isn't a "twinkling of the eye" process (yes, one day, very soon, there will be a humungous change, in the twinkling of an eye, but then we will not be imperfect, as we so very ARE today; then we will not be MORTAL, as we so obviously are today; THEN, at that time, NATURE will be different, we will be different, the world will be different, our characters as well as our bodies will be different, without sin, completely free of death, dying, imperfection and negative thought), but we're talking about TODAY, aren't we? Today, in this filthy world, a world filled with terror, death, catastrophe and uncertainty, God will work with us, shaping us, His gentle, loving fingers molding our clay. When we accept Him, and He begins to change us, this is not Him SAVING us -- when we accept Him, we already have salvation, it is a free gift with no strings attached...
...this process of Him changing us, refining us, perfecting us -- it is not a process about "getting us ready for heaven," or making us more acceptable to Him, no it is a process about making us more the way we'd like to be, more the way we SHOULD be, more and more LIKE Him, every day, and it could prove to be a bumpy, irritating, uncomfortable road. One day SOON, in the twinkling of an eye, when Jesus is revealed in the clouds, believers WILL be changed, in the twinkling of an eye, at that time they will be made ready for heaven, the thief on the cross will be changed just like us, we will be converted from flesh-and-blood physically imperfect sinners into immortal, sinless beings that reflect back God's holy shekinah glory.
But then send in the clowns -- oh, sorry, I meant "teachers." They come in with a "Word" for you, supposedly from God Himself, and they say: "It is important that you are rich, that you have fancy cars and massive houses, to attract non-Christians to our cause." Of course the Bible says, distinctly, that riches are not important, that it is practically impossible for a rich dude to get through the pearly gates, that we aren't to worry about clothes and all the things that the world worries about because we are to rely on our Heavenly Father, that we are to lay up treasures in heaven because that is where our heart will be, that is where our REWARD will be...
...but come on! Who knows more, the ancient Word of God, written way back when, when the world was still flat, or these "Anointed Guys," guys with bad hair and $10K Rolex watches, who are alive and rich, today, and they will teach you real formulae to get rich -- who wouldn't choose these rich guys over an ancient book, especially when one clearly contradicts the other? Who wants a poor Jesus, a guy who doesn't even have a place to place his head at night, when the "Anointed Guys" offer a rich, fat-cat Jesus, one drawn about in golden chariots, sporting designer robes and mother-of-pearl inlaid Rolex wrist sundials?

Hey, it's not fun to be poor.

Can I get an "amen?"

Turn to the person next to you
and say: "Poverty Sucks!"

Why, if we only had enough moolah, why, we could solve all our problems, pay off all them debts, meet all them responsibilities and obligations, and good night, then we wouldn't have to pray so much, would we?
We'd be independent, with our own authority, and then we wouldn't need to draw so much on God's authority, depending on Him for everything, and He could devote more of His attention to all them thar poor creeps in the world who need His attention more than us -- afterall, Jesus said He came to save sinners, not us all-righteous dudes. We'd be RICH, in need of NOTHING. Can I get an "amen?"
The thing I hear the most often is: "You're missing the point on all these guys -- they DO teach out of the Bible, and they're just telling you to tithe, and pray, and enjoy God, what's so bad about that? It's attractive. It brings people to God! And it's fun, and it's harmless!"
Maybe, and maybe not. I admit, a lot of what the "rogues" teach is pretty dern near the truth, purty dern tootin' a lot of it really is. Proverbially close, but no proverbial cigar. Kind of like "almost pregnant." You know, horseshoes and hand grenades?
They tell you that they have scoured the Bible and have found the very real formula to bring you fame, fortune, friends and glory. (Too bad they can't find anything to help with their hairstyles and slang diction, can I get a "Boy Howdy?") They have found the formula to "git you rich" but they can't do anything about their gray hair, well, other than what is found in them bottles on your super market shelves, you know the ones, with all the impossibly beautiful women on the labels?
Sorry, no such formula is in the Bible. The Bible isn't about formulae.
God is not worried about wealth, riches, or get-rich formulae. God DOES care about how we treat each other, if we respect Him or not, and how we care for ourselves (our bodies are called "the temple of the Holy Spirit," really, check it out). Perhaps Saddamn Hussein is really beloved of God, and that's why he has so many palaces, but I guarantee you, even Saddamn's most gorgeous palace can't hold a candle to what the poorest person in heaven will have, what Jesus has prepared for that wretched homeless man who desperately sings "Jesus Loves Me."
God DOES want us to tithe, a minimum of ten percent of what we earn, and offer gifts in addition. So that we can "git rich?" So that pastors can make more money than Bill Gates? So that "praise singers" can fly on the Concorde in first class?
No He doesn't, but perhaps He does so that we can feed the starving, clothe the naked, domicile the homeless, take care of each other, and spread His Good News (not so that we can send money to a TV show so that they can increase syndicated coverage over the world so that they can ask for money to pay for their electricity and satellite expenses so that they can put out even more and more of the same stuff, "Send me your money! It is a seed, and you will reap a glorious harvest in cars with push-button alarms and garages with push-button doors to attract the Smiths and Joneses to you so that they too can send in their money so that we can in turn increase the number of channels we broadcast on, and so on and so forth and redundantly again, can I get a Boy Howdy Shazzam?). See the difference?
And God promises us, "Don't worry, maybe it seems hard, offering to Me this sum, but I promise I will take care of you!" And God is always true to His Word. Maybe you won't get a Rolls Royce for the last hundred bucks you plunk down in the plate, but God assures you that He will take care of you. And think about it, the insurance would kill you on a Rolls, as would the gas bills, and you'd be terrified of bird poop, shopping carts, and that chauffeur ain't gonna work for free.
This Biblical directive hardly resembles what "prosperity teachers" are demanding from the livid blue glow of your TV screen. Jesse Duplantis even has the audacity to smirk: "Hey, it ain't a money thang -- heck no! It's an oh-bee-dee-ants thang!" I've heard Joyce Meyer smirk the exact same smirk, verbatum. As if God has given you and me an Eleventh Commandment to support the Goober Gospel.
Yes Harry Houdini was a very unpopular guy, in certain circles. But do you think he was a bad man? That he took sniggering pride in depriving all those spiritualists of their very hard-earned moolah? I don't think he was bad, I think he was trying to help. Perhaps he wasn't a Christian, but hey, if he's not against us don't stop him from what he's doing, he's working on the correct side, perhaps inadvertently, perhaps he does not know he has aligned himself with Christ. Give the boy a hand.
The difficult thing is, how do you reach Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Or Buzz Lightyear? They're not bad men, either. Both are probably just as smart as Harry Houdini (even with one being just a toy!), in different ways. But Doyle's fallen into a pit of deception, and he needs our help. He actually believes he is serving God, spreading the "good news" of "Crossing Over" from death to life and back again; he believes that this "new thing" is a good thing, even though the Bible teaches it is demonic.
That's my point, that's what this website is all about, helping those good-hearted Conan Doyles and Buzz Lightyears out there that fully believe they are right in lining up with the adversary of Yahweh. If I can help him, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in any way I can, whether it be my own personal experience with some of the things he believes in, or in pointing out for him a few of the many, many ways that his beliefs contradict the Bible, I'm going to keep making the attempt. And this will make a lot of Sir Arthur Conan Doyles angry, many of them will send me e-mails calling me a disrupter, a trouble maker, they'll tell me I'm not enlightened, that I don't have revelation, that I give them a check in the spirit, that the Holy Spirit DEMANDS that I pray in tongues and if I don't I will be tormented and cursed -- but hey, I won't hold it against them. I'll pray for them. And I fully believe prayer is real, that it works, that God listens, that God answers.
And in most cases, I'll probably like them, and wouldn't mind being their e-mail penpal, and perhaps they might even offer some thoughts that might help me? Who knows. I'll give it a shot. I don't claim to be Harry Houdini, not even the Amazing Randi. I'm just DCLWolf, nobody you've ever heard of and probably will never "meet" again, or hear about. I'm just doing what I feel, mightily, that God has called me to do, in the mightiest way I can, with boldness. Maybe I'm the deceived one, maybe I'm the guy in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's shoes -- and yet my theology DOES come straight out of the Bible, and not through any group or prophet or pamphlet or TV show, and it is all very "main and plain," and fairly easy to explain. You absolutely do not have to multiply this verse by these three verses, while excommunicating this whole portion of Scripture via subtraction, and then adding these to these to these to get THIS, which is completely opposite to everything I've just been quoting (just do a simple search on the Internet, begin a few "basic" Bible studies, and you'll see exactly what I mean!).
But bad theology, smarmy preaching and sly begging isn't what is so very dangerous about this New Age Movement that has obscurred itself beneath the cloaks of the Charismatic Movement, Word of Faith, Pentacostal and New Revelation groups. True, the aforementioned begging, scripture twisting, and direct contradiction to the clear and direct Word of God is disruptive, it is irritating, it causes non-Christians to flick the channel in disgust and vow that Christianity is the stupidest man-made circus sideshow in the history of the world, that calm and serious Buddhism and Hinduism appears a grave genius in comparison to this retarded Christianity. But this isn't what is so deadly.

Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
