This is the home that Charles Maxwell (1777-1857) built at Cross Creek in Wayne Township, Jefferson Co. Oh. On land patent he received in 1806 from President Thomas Jefferson. He built the first two story brick house in the township. Many of his children were born and raised here. His son David (1810-1891) worked the mill at this location until his death. Called "Maxwell Mill".It was a saw and grist mill located on Cross Creek near the house the house is located on Old Rt. 22 from Cadix to Wintersville, Oh. In Oct.1994 Roger Pyles a teacher in Steubvenille Schools, started restoring the old house and the picture at the bottom was taken after he had siding put on the house over the stucco and brick. In the 1920s Mr. Chalfant owned the house and he covered the brick with stucco. Roger hopes to have the insides done by 2003. Thanks to Roger this old home, which held so many families is coming back to life, and hope to see it registered it he historical homes of Jefferson County Ohio. |

MY FATHER'S FAMILY OF MAXWELL'S, BALL'S, FISHER'S, CLIFTON'S, SUNDERLAND'S, KLINE'S, AND OTHERS WERE ALL PIONEERS OF JEFFERSON COUNTY OHIO. MOST OF THEM CAME TO STEUBENVILLE BEFORE OHIO WAS A STATE. STILL CALLED THE "NORTH WEST TERRITORY". THE HARLAN FAMILY WERE ENGLISH QUAKERS AS WHERE THE BALL'S TALBOTT'S, MOORES. THE FISHER/FISCHERS WERE GERMAN, AS WERE THE KLINE/KLEINHENN'S, THE CABLES'S OF "CABLE'S BEND" WERE ALSO FROM GERMANY. THE MAXWELL'S WERE FROM SCOTLAND AND IRELAND. SUNDERLANDS WERE FROM ENGLAND, AS PROBABLY MANY OTHERS OF THE FAMILIES WERE ALSO. I HAVE DONE CONSIDERABLE RESEARCH ON ALL OF MY FATHER'S ANCESTORS OF JEFFERSON COUNTY AND WILL GLADLY SHARE WHAT I HAVE FOUND WITH OTHERS ALSO SEARCHING JEFFERSON COUNTY PIONEERS. |
