ABOUT DR. MAURIELLO'S WORK SINCE 1983
Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) temporarily weakens the eyelid muscle spasms that result in involuntary eyelid closure.  Dr. Mauriello has used the Botox injections to treat involuntary facial and neck spasms as well.  These eyelid spasms, in particular, depending on their severity, render patients functionally disabled and troubled.   Dr. Mauriello has treated over 700 patients with blepharospasm, Meige syndrome, and hemifacial spasm in over 10,000 treatment sessions since 1983.  Over the years, he has treated many of the patients with the most difficult eyelids spasms to control.  He has published results of limited myectomy and full myectomy eyelid surgery in patients who partially respond to botulinum toxin injections or have excess upper lid skin that weighs down the eyelids.

Dr. Mauriello's long interest in blepharospasm began in the early 1980's.  He was part of the original National Institute of Health's study entitled, Botulinum Toxin in the Treatment of Benign Essential Blepharospasm.  This multicenter center was under the direction of Alan Scott, MD, Principal Investigator from Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco   (1983-1989).

Dr. Mauriello was honored to be selected a consultant to the Committee of Ophthalmic Procedures Assessment, American Academy of Ophthalmology 1985-89.  This committee evaluated the effectiveness of botulinum toxin, type A, during its experimental research development.

Dr. Mauriello currently serves as a Reviewer to the American Academy of Neurology Therapeutics Assessment Committee and its Subcommittee Assessment of BotulinumToxin Therapy.

He was invited to the speaker's Bureau of  Allergan Pharmaceutical (Botox) , Irvine, California in 1997 and served on the Board of Medical Advisors of the local Northern New Jersey Blepharospasm Foundation in Summit, NJ from 1985-88.

Dr. Mauriello's interest in facial dyskinesias is highlighted by the series of original publications, book chapters, and presentations he has made since 1985.
