A German Pinscher is a rare breed dog that looks a lot like a doberman but only grows to about 17 to 20 inches tall and weighs about 35 to 40 pounds at most.(After having dobermans for 25 years, we appreciate this smaller size) German Pinschers have a very long lifespan and are excellent house pets. They barely shed, are very intelligent and loyal life-long companions.German Pinschers are just becoming recognized in the USA after over 400 years of popularity in Europe. It is said that they are one of the foundations of the doberman.A German Pinscher dog is often mistaken for a Doberman puppy,a giant Miniature Pinscher,or a very muscular Manchester terrior. In Germany,it's homeland it was known as a "ratter",a hunter of rats and vermin.

History Of The Breed
Originally, the German Pinscher litters had both smooth & wirehaired puppies. When Pinscher-Schnauzer Klub(PSK) was founded in Germany in 1895, it was agreed that only smooth coated German Pinschers would be bred, which became the main goal for the breeders at that time.By separating the long & short-haired specimens in the same litters, and by selective breeding, the "PSK" produced a very remakable dog. After the World War the German Pinscher began to loose popularity in his homeland. In the mid-1950's,Karl Werner Junghof saved this breed from near extinction.Junghof was able to find a few of these dogs left in Germany and started a serious breeding program. In the United States there are about 500 German Pinschers, with a handfull of serious breeders promoting the breed.German Pinschers are now accepted by the AKC as of 3/1/01
