ARCHIVED GREENWAY NAC NEWS

05/02/2002   Some statistics from the pedestrian island appeal:  At the appeal hearing, oral testimony in opposition to the proposed island was received from five individuals. Written testimony in opposition was received from twelve individuals. At the appeal hearing, testimony in support of the island was received from four individuals. Written testimony in support of the island was received from three individuals.

04/09/2002   City Council approved the pedestrian island appeal by a 5 to 0 vote. That means the pedestrian island will not be built.

03/16/2002   The preciously mentioned pedestrian island appeal to City Council is scheduled for April 1, 2002 at 6:30 pm. Read the March 2002 Greenway Newsletter for information on how to testify by mail, email or in person. Click here for the newsletter.

01/31/2002   The Greenway NAC passed a motion to appeal Traffic Commission approval of the previously mentioned median. The appeal will be to City Council. This action was taken at the January 17, 2002 meeting. Since the final order will not be signed until the February 7, 2002 Traffic Commission meeting, the appeal will be submitted to the city within ten days of the signing of the final order. Watch for an update on this and various ways to provide input to the hearing.

12/26/2001   The Beaverton Traffic Commission approved the previously mentioned pedestrian median by a 4 to 3 vote. The median is to be designed such that it may be removed if the medians causes too many traffic problems. Citizens testifying against the median lived in the area and understand the traffic nightmare the median will cause.

12/02/2001   There is a proposal before the Beaverton Traffic Commission to put a pedestrian island in the center turn lane on Hall Boulevard at the point where the Greenway Park pedestrian path crosses Hall Boulevard. Since traffic now lines up in this lane westbound for the turn onto Greenway, traffic would be forced to line up on the westbound inner lane of Hall. The traffic engineers say their models indicate that this would not impede traffic since the outer westbound lane on Hall could handle all of the westbound traffic.  The issue will come before the Traffic Commission on December 6, 2001 at 7:00 PM.. The Traffic Commission meets at Beaverton City Hall in the City Council Chambers. This is a public hearing with citizen testimony allowed.  For more information call Randy Wooley at 503-526-2443.

12/02/2001   Beaverton City Council decided to not require a Hall Boulevard eastbound right turn lane be added at Greenway as part of the Hall Boulevard Bike Lane construction between Ridgecrest Drive and Cascade. The right turn lane was dropped after hearing that its cost would greatly exceed earlier estimates. The adjacent apartment project was also concerned about some of their units being within seven feet of Hall Boulevard. There was also testimony about the difficulty of entering Greenway from side streets since the right turn lane would probably cause continuous traffic on Greenway at rush hour with no breaks between cars.

11/02/2001   The public hearing on the appeal of the Hall Boulevard and Greenway right turn lane (see article dated 09/08/2001 for details) was continued until November 19, 2001. This is to give the traffic department time to do some additional engineering work and provide additional notice to nearby property owners.

10/01/2001   There are reports of a coyote family living in Greenway Park. The coyotes have been feasting on local cats. They attacked a cat around 5:00 AM in the morning. Early morning is their usual feeding time. It might be good to put cats inside at night. The Park District's policy is to leave wildlife alone unless it threatens humans.

09/08/2001   The city is in the process of getting approval for the Hall Boulevard bike lanes. Click here for background information from the July Greenway Newsletter. The Board of Design Review added a condition that a separated right turn be added on eastbound Hall Blvd at Greenway. While the traffic division agrees the right turn lane would help traffic and be safer for bicycles, they do not have funds for it. They are appealing this condition of approval to City Council on October 8, 2001. Since Hall Blvd will be torn up and traffic poles moved anyway, the cost is around $60,000.00.

08/24/2001   The Board of Design Review approved the proposal to build a 46 unit complex on the SE corner of SW 125th Avenue and SW Conestoga Drive.

08/24/2001   The damage to the Greenway Pedestrian Bridge is minor. Total repair expense is around $4,000.00 and the repairs should be completed before school starts.

08/21/2001   The Pedestrian Bridge over Greenway has again been damaged by a collision and is now closed. The bridge was again hit by a garbage truck and the truck is owned by the same company who hit it last time. A structural engineer was on site Monday (08/20/2001) attempting to determine the extent of damage. The damage does not look as bad as last time and the goal is to have the bridge open before school begins. As soon as I have more information I will post it to the site.

08/21/2001  The Board of Design Review public meeting on the 46 unit apartment complex was continued until August 23, 2001. After receiving testimony on July 26, 2001, the board deliberated and then continued the hearing. The Board further directed the applicant to address the following:
1.  Landscaping within a raised berm along 125th Avenue street frontage.
2.  Tree preservation measures for the existing oak tree and any other trees selected for preservation.
3.  Revised elevations and color board, including a colored elevation drawing to show the location of different materials and colors.

07/05/2001   The Beaverton Police Department has added a Web Page that has both Crime Maps and Crime Statistics for each NAC. Click here to go the Beaverton Police Department Crime Analysis Web Page.

01/12/2001:  On Friday January 5, 2001 a man attempted to abduct an 8-year-old Beaverton girl while she walked home from Greenway Elementary School at about 3:20 p.m. A man sitting in a car near the corner of SW Trail Court and SW Fannowood Lane opened his door and told her to get inside because someone special was waiting for her.  The girl ran from the area and went to a nearby block home where she received adult assistance.

08/14/2000:  Two fires have recently been reported in Greenway Park. The first fire was on July 21, 2000 and was confined to a pile of grass clippings near the north end of the park. The Fire Department was unable to determine the source of the fire. The second fire on July 31, 2000 was near the south end of Greenway Park. This was a grass fire that did little damage. However, the fire was either accidentally or intentionally started by someone. The Fire Department did find evidence of spent fireworks but could not determine if that was the source of the fire.

07/18/2000:  There is an application with the City of Beaverton Planning Department requesting a Design Review approval of a wetland enhancement project within Greenway Park. The wetland enhancement includes .88 acre of wetland creation and .70 acres of wetland enhancement in a riparian area adjacent to Fanno Creek. The wetland enhancement is proposed as mitigation for wetlands that will be filled for the construction of a new commercial building located in the city of Tigard. The application states that aesthetically, the mitigation project will improve the view from the residences backing on to the park as well as those who use the pedestrian path. The Parks District has approved the plan. Click here for some excerpts from the application staff report. For further information, you may contact the Beaverton Development Services Division at 526-2348.

5/31/2000: The Mayor's Walking Town Meeting on 05/18/2000 was a success. Channel 6 TV was present and showed part of the walk on the 11:00 pm news.

02/02/2000:  There have been two home invasions in the last several weeks in the Greenway area. Both incidents took place at an apartment complex. One was in the 12400 Block of Southwest Conestoga Drive and the other incident was at the Kimberly West Apartments, 7855 S.W. Hall Blvd. News reports indicate that police were called on both incidents while the invasion was in process. The police did not arrive in time to capture anyone and have yet to make an arrest. I will keep this site updated on any new developments.

10/22/1999: The City of Beaverton Web Page is now available. The URL is

. Agendas and minutes of City Council, Planning Commission, and Board of Design Review are available on this site.  The city has hired a full time webmaster to maintain the site so expect a good site to get even better.
