Welcome!
C'mon in and Meet the Girls
Velvet is a Rex Rabbit. Her color is castor from the Castor Bean.Rex rabbits have soft velvety coats.  They have no whiskers, except wiry, crinkly ones. Rex Rabbits are known affectionately as the "Original Velveteen Rabbit".

I first saw Velvet in a pet shop. (I was there to buy fish food).  The sign on her cage declared, "Velveteen Rabbit." She was in a very smelly cage.  Inside the cage with her was a dog's bone and a stuffed toy.  Velvet came right up to my hand and seemed pleased.  She let me rub her nose and didn't shy away from my touch.  This was on Friday night.  I thought about her all weekend.

I beleive that there are no accidents and things always happen with a purpose.  I believe too, if a bunny is your bunny, then that bunny will find you and you will know.

I went back to the pet shop on Sunday to see if she was still there.  She was,  Hiding her face behind the stuffed toy.  This time, I took her out of the cage and held her in my arms.  She licked and licked my hand. (bunny kisses). No rabbit had ever kissed me before.  As I marveled at this wonderful creature, an employee with a mop and broom said, "Too bad about that rabbit...she is much too pretty for snake food."  The bunny kiss was the deciding factor. I knew Velvet was my rabbit.

The only history I have of her is that she was returned to the pet shop from a school and that she was about 8 months old.

I was totally delighted with my new girl.  She had the biggest ears I had ever seen on a rabbit.  All my rabbits in the past were dwarfs.

Interesting Facts:

The term "REX" refers to one holding the station in life of regent or king of a country. The short furred rabbits were originally propagated by King Albert of Belgium.
Miss Bea (named in honor of Peter's Rabbit's Mum- Beatrix Potter) is a Netherland Dwarf, one of the the smaller bunny breeds. Although, she appears large in this photo, she weighs 3 pounds in this picture.  Miss Bea's coloring is called "wild agouti", a nice mix of blacks, browns, whites and red.  She has one white paw and is quite the sassy lady.   She is a very shy girl and perfers human contact on her terms exclusively.   She's a clever girl too!  She learned the litter box in only three days!
