Message from the Chair:
Development of a Regional Planning Best Practices Monograph: Utilizing Division volunteer resources and those at cases study sites, we are now engaged in a Division project to develop a monograph which highlights sub state regional planning best practices. We anticipate 20 or more case studies and they will cover large, medium, and small metropolitan areas as well as those in rural areas. Our criteria for determining a best practice is: how has a regional planning practice positively affected the physical growth of the region or significant portions thereof, and how has a regional planning practice fostered the environmental sustainability of the region. So far we have identified well over 20 case studies where, initially at least, there is a commitment on the part of case study participants to get involved. Fourth Mid-Atlantic Regional Planning Roundtable Will Receive APA Education Excellence Award at Upcoming National APA Conference: On November 9, 2007, the Division sponsored this Roundtable in Fredericksburg, Virginia as hosted by the George Washington Regional Commission and Mary Washington University. Some 55-60 people were present. Participants and subject-matter came from as far south as Richmond and as far northeastward as southern New Jersey. The keynote luncheon speaker was the former Governor of Maryland, Parris Glendening. The driving force behind this and past Roundtables has been Division member Thomas Christoffel. The next Division-sponsored Mid-Atlantic Regional Planning Roundtable will be in Philadelphia on November 9, 2008. It will be co-hosted by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and the Wilmington Metropolitan Area Planning Council.
Division Growth: Division membership is now at about 190. Per APA figures, from July 1 of 2005 to July 1, 2007, we had grown 30 percent, making us the fastest growing and only one of two growing Divisions in that period. By this summer we hope to have reached 200 members. If we achieve that goal we will have grown from a low of 121 members four and one half years ago, or at an annual growth rate of 11-12 percent. Continued Division growth is necessary to meet our mission, goals and objectives, and APA performance requirements.
By-Law Revisions, and 2008-2010 Election Cycle: In December of 2007, draft by-laws and a one-page summary of changes from the old by-laws went out to all Division members for review. The thrust of these changes was to bring our 20 plus year by-laws up to date. In April of 2008, these by-laws went out to the membership for an approval or disapproval vote. The call for candidates for the 2008-20010 election cycle went out in late March of 2008. Elections should be completed in late June. For those interested in running for office, please contact the Nominating Committee Chair, Mr. Thomas Dow. His e-mail is tdow@ksdot.org; his phone is: (785) 296-2552.
Division Web Site: The Presentations link contains presentations from Division's panels at National APA conferences held in Philadelphia (2007) San Antonio (2006) San Francisco (2005), Washington, DC (2004), and Denver (2003). It contains considerable information for various kinds of metropolitan or regional planning for areas around Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boise, Dallas, Denver, Fort Worth, Houston-Galveston, Kansas City, Sacramento, San-Francisco-Oakland-Jose, Seattle, The Wasatch Front (Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo), Washington, DC, and three regional planning areas in New Jersey.
