' Music United For Animals Project '
Songs by Maria Daines
'Music United For Animals' is a collection of songs written to speak up for animals in distress and each song supports the end of cruelty.
Many animal welfare/rights subjects are explored in the 13 track cd, which includes the ballad 'I am the owner of this coat' written to make people aware of the horror of the fur trade. 'They Wanna Kill (Have mercy on the ice) reminds listeners of seal extermination annually, while the true story of Fozzie Bear, a puppy that died in his rescuers arms at only 17 weeks old, tells the tale of puppy mills. Factory farming is exposed in the rock song 'Your meat is our murder' and other topics of animal cruelty include fighting with dogs, vivisection, veal trade, bear bile farming and the International anthem 'Rise Up - Make this moment Last' written for Marijo Gillis of WAG, New York (Welfare for Animals Global) is a call for everyone to try to make a difference.
All proceeds from this cd will support rescue shelters.

CD Song Notes
Music United For Animals is a collection of songs for animal welfare/rights issues. 1000 cd copies are being shared amongst rescue shelters world wide. Proceeds from sales will be used for postage and repressing another 1000 copies, we hope to keep the project going as long as possible.
Notes -
'Abandoned in Romania'
A song written for the Romanian stray dog issue, our friend Daniela sent us news of the situation there. Romania urgently needs a good working animal welfare policy, spay/neuter support and an end to the cruel practice of 'dog catching' killing strays with sticks and poisoning.
'Song of the Motherless Calf'
Written to make people aware of the veal trade. The atmosphere Paul creates within the music portrays fear and bewilderment, the mournful sound of a calf crying is played on guitar, this was our way of giving voice to the motherless calves who live and die in misery.
'Rise Up - Make This Moment Last'
Inspired by and written for Marijo Gillis of WAG, New York, (Welfare for Animals Global) 'Moment in Time' campaign. Marijo hopes this song will become the International Anthem for animals.
'I Wanna Run Free'
Written in support of ending horse slaughter in USA, an anthem to help restore the importance of the role horses play in American people's lives and hearts. We treasure the message we received from Willie Nelson when he heard this song.
'I Am The Owner Of This Coat'
Inspired by Mary Alice Pollard, Cornwall's Voice For Animals. A song to make people aware of the fur trade and what it really means to animals used for their coats.
'The Rainbow Bridge'
Written for Mercy, the 10 month old pit bull mix puppy who was tortured and died from her injuries in April 2006. 'Mercy's song' has been shared by so many people all over the world and the Music United For Animals cd is dedicated to this brave young dog whose life was cut short by cruelty.
'I Don't Wanna Fight No More'
Was inspired by Rawlins Gilliland, a writer from Dallas, Texas. Rawlins wrote an article on the issue of unwanted larger mixed breeds, he likened neglected dogs, chained dogs, ill treated dogs, to a 'growling gun' and we felt a song was needed to speak out against fighting with dogs. Mary Alice, CVFA, made a film slide show to accompany this song and you can find it by clicking the link above.
'Stop That It Hurts'
For animals in research laboratories. We were asked to write a song on this subject by a scientist formerly practising in vivisection who is now an advocate for animal welfare. I wanted to show the emotional relationship animals have with each other and with human beings. Through the lyrics I was able to give a dog and a monkey a means to plot their escape. This was inspired by the true story of a monkey who was heartbroken when his friend was taken away from the cage next door, he tore out chunks of his fur and was totally inconsolable. Paul's narration of the George Bernard Shaw quote sends a strong message to the vivisection industry. The human race must find another solution to research without using animals.
'Fozzie Bear's Story'
Inspired by a true story. Fozzie was a tiny 17 week old pup who died in his rescuer's arms, victim of a puppy mill. For all the dogs and puppies still living in deplorable conditions in puppy factories (including Fozzie's mother) we hope this song helps to expose their lives of pain and misery.
'They Wanna Kill (Have Mercy On The Ice)'
Written to highlight the horror of seal extermination. A wealthy business woman had offered the Canadian seal industry millions of dollars to stop the killing, the offer was apparently turned down and all anyone could assume from that fact was 'they wanna kill'.
'The Ballad Of Mary Ann Bones'
Elephants are often 'trained' by being physically hurt and bullied behind the scenes in the circus and the cruelty is justified in the name of tradition and family fun. Surely there are better ways to appreciate the beauty of wildlife?
'Andrew'
Inspired by the editorial 'A day in the sun for Moon Bears' which details the journey of Dr Jill Robinson as she began her work building the Animals Asia Foundation, a charity rescuing bears from bile farms. Beautiful, gentle Andrew was the AAF's ambassador and their first rescue bear. Andrew sadly passed away in February 2006, writing this song was the only way we could honour his life.
'Your Meat is our Murder'
Written to tell the experience of animals within factory farming. Whether you eat meat or not there is no denying animals do not wish to be killed. This is a hard hitting heavy rock song that pulls no punches.

Music United For Animals by Maria Daines
Music for a cause is nothing new but music solely devoted to animals does seem novel. Maria Daines, a British singer and songwriter has just released a CD entitled, Music United for Animals, that is aimed towards the cause of animal rights and welfare. Says Maria, "As a child I had many pets and my mother taught me how to respect animals."
Indeed, her album espouses the cause of animals in a medley of situations, starting from dogs in Romania to the horses of the US.
"I can think of no better reason to create music and I would like to make a difference that I can feel in my heart, and share with others," remarks Maria.
The CD features 13 songs, all of which are thoroughly enjoyable. The best song of the album is the ballad, I am the owner of this coat, to make people aware of the horror of the fur trade. Maria has also voiced her concern for Indian animals. Recently, she wrote a song for a protest concerning an elephant polo match organised in Jaipur.
She has also performed on BBC recently.
"Everywhere, the animals need a friend," says Maria. The animals surely have one in her. (The CD is available for order from her website: www.maria-daines.com/home.html )
