1917 Russia exits W.W.I to fight their own Russian Revolution --- aka - Bolshevik Revolution creates the USSR
Czar is removed and V. Lenin takes control in Petrograd in 1917 ( Moscow becomes the leading city )
Communism is implemented - 70 years - a command economy is put into place where the central gov't makes all decisions about the economy
1925 Lenin dies  ---  Joseph Stalin takes over and requires total control by the state - TOTALITARIANISM
Stalin transform the country from AG to IND
World War II takes place - US/USSR relationship

World War II aftermath - THE COLD WAR
1953 - Stalin dies - 1956 N. Khrushchev takes over
Khrushchev comes to America - better feelings
U-2 spy plane incident / Eastern Europe upheavals take place and the Cold War is "hotter" than ever
Cuban Missile Crisis - 1960's......Khrushchev backs down
Leonid Brezhnev - 1966-1982  Bad times economically.  Money being spent on the military and not the people
Yuri Andropov - 1982-1984...Andropov wants to reform the economy
Mikhail Gorbachov - 1985 - CHANGE/CHANGE/CHANGE He introduced glastnost - openness - media, rights, etc.
Gorbachov introduced perestroika - changing the political structure / reforms.  This obviously met with resistance.
1991 failed coup attempt of Gorbachov
The Soviet Union breaks up into separate "states" or countries
1st democratic elections take place and Boris Yeltsin becomes the first elected President of Russia
