(Copied from the last journal and pic page...in case you didn't see)
The start of my wall of books!
The very first books to go on the shelf were "A whack on the side of the head" "Castaway" "The Snow Leopard" and a book on creative travel journal writing. I had bought them the day before at Rivendell, our local used bookstore.
Last night I bought some glow in the dark galxay thingies to glue to the ceiling above my bed. I was going to buy a big bag of stars too, but they were out. Next time! I also bought a star shaped nightlight, and a gallon of purple paint. The peak wall up in the loft area is getting the purple treatment, to make it more cozy and infinite-galaxy-like. I'll find a use for the rest of the purple paint somehow...
Today I had my boss pick up a few sample tiles on a trip to Home Depot. I'm going to lay them out on my floor and see if I like them. If I do, I'll have a diagonally laid black and white alternating tile floor. Is that too over-the-top? Or will they look right at home with the tropical plants and plastic pink flamingos I'm planning on getting? :-)
Tomorrow, I get to quit the job I've had since May. Free time!!
November 1st
I officially wrapped up the carpentry job I've had since May. Whoopie! Now what do I do?
Tomorrow I'm going to start carting out my books and filling up my shelves. I just hope the brackets are sufficient :-)
Later this week I'm going to Home Depot to pick up some tiles. I'm planning on spending a few hours wandering the aisles while mom is at a doctor appointment.
Dusty :-)
The dust eventually settles
Before

November 2nd
Today was spent sanding, sanding, and sanding. I sanded my ceiling, then slapped the second coat of mud on it. I sanded the awful looking table, and made it look pretty again. Then I sanded a 50 year old kitchen sink backsplash...because the homeowner wanted it done over the weekend. Oh well, it's her money. Overtime pay :-)
I moved my trim boards out of the way, and scooted my couch back over to the book wall. Now I'll be able to sit on the couch, warm my toes near the woodstove, and reach up for any book I want.
I am definately going with the black and white tiles! They look so ... bright :-) My house is definately not sedate.

Heather painting
November 3rd
Todays theme was painting. :-) I primed and painted three chairs, a table, and clouds on my entire ceiling. Painting the chairs felt so taboo....I'm usually the one who gasps in horror when the designers on Trading Spaces paint nice wooden furniture. But, the chairs are from yard sales, and aren't in the nicest wood finish shape.
Tomorrow, the oversize cribbage table gets it! I had to let it thaw today, because there was ice in every single one of the cribbage holes. I'm also going to paint my kitchen table. It was primed halfway today.
To paint the clouds, I had to stand on the "Do not stand on" step of a ladder, and on my non-screwed on bookshelves. I'm going to give them a couple more coats, one of blue, and another of white. Then I'm going to glue on my glow in the dark galaxy above my bed.

Yesterday I had 5 inches of my hair hacked off. Notice how much shorter these braids are, than the ones I have in the picture at www.HeathersHikingHiatus.Homestead.com
I wasn't expecting to get a haircut that day, and hadn't even washed my hair in ohhh...about a week. Mom asked the hairdresser how many trees and gallons of paint she had found in my hair. I wasn't that bad, really! I only had a little paint in it...maybe some joint compound dust ... but definately not any trees!
News on the housefront: I bought another 5 gallon pail of joint compound. I just can't get enough of it :-) I used some of it today to mud up my kitchen ceiling again.
I also erased my clouds today. They weren't poofy and wispy enough, so I rollered over them with blue, and will sponge on some new ones when my ceiling dries. I've never been able to paint clouds correctly. Must be a genetic defect.
I'm going back out to my house and work some more, I'm only in for lunch. Part two to come tonight...

Piled Clutter
Primed Floor
November 9th
Wednesday night, I swept and picked up all extraneous junk off my floor. As you can see in the piled clutter pic, there was a bunch! You would not believe the amount of acumulated grime there was...
The floor has been thoroughly scrubbed and primed. Tonight I'm going to finally lay down my tiles!!!
Tomorrow morning I'll upload pictures of what happened during the night. Stay tuned. :-)

Nobody has ever accused me of being subtle.
Messy Wall
Sunset out in our field
November 11th
Maybe you've noticed that I haven't been taking pictures of any wall but the one with the kitchen appliances. This is because the rest of the house looks extremely messy. :-) I took this picture today because someone requested it.
As you can see, there is a big pile of sheetrock scraps leaning on the right wall, tons of things piled on the couch, the bookshelves have everything but books on them, and there's a ladder in the way. It was soooo much fun to move everything around to tile.
I finished tiling the floor today, yippie! Now to move everything in....and straighten up what's there!
Today I painted my door red, spray painted my stove knobs and handles chrome, finished tiling, touched up the white parts of my stove with spray enamel, polished up the sink handles, dragged my kitchen table back inside, gave it another coat of white paint, and tried to neaten up a bit.

The different views of my house ... I realized I hadn't taken any outside pictures in a while, until somebody asked for them.
Siding hasn't progressed much in the last year. I've gotten to the point where I need some help to put it up. My house is just too high to put it up easily by myself.
Anybody want to come over and help out? :-) I'll feed you, you can sleep in my cool little house, we'll put up siding, and I'll make you famous by posting your picture on this webpage. Any takers? :-)
December 1st
Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to meeeeee....I'm 19 today! Gosh, I'm getting old fast! Only 2 more years to make myself interesting, so outdoor companies will want to hire me. Why is 21 the usual minimum outdoor leader age?
Both of my parents are sick with food poisoning today, so I'm the only non sick one in the house. Perhaps I'll bake myself a birthday cake...
The picture above is of some books. I totally filled one shelf, and put another shelf higher up. I've also primed my kitchen ceiling. Pretty soon you'll have to switch back over to my Hiking Hiatus site, and watch me have fun hiking in Florida!
December 28th 2002
There will be no more house updates for a year - I'm going to be busy hiking 5,192 miles from Key West, FL to Cape Gaspe, Quebec.
Lots of pictures and journals will be available on that site, starting the first week of January when I set foot from Key West, Florida. I'll return in a year, more or less. :-)
