VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Archbishop Murphy takes care of Cedarcrest

EVERETT -- The Archbishop Murphy volleyball team's goal Monday night was to keep Cedarcrest out of its offensive sets with an aggressive offense of its own. Apparently Becca Gotz took the message to heart as she converted 16 of 19 kill attempts and led the Wildcats to a 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 Cascade Conference victory.

"I told the setter to just keep going to her," Archbishop Murphy coach Jim Hardy said.

Down 6-9 in the first set, the Wildcats went on an 11-0 run and never looked back. As a team, Archbishop Murphy ended up with 37 kills, 11 aces, 33 assists and 11 blocks.

"What really worked for us tonight was converting back-row attacking," Hardy said. "Ashley (Broadwell) and Becca were very effective back there."

RaeLea Davidson had five kills for Cedarcrest and teammates Lindsey Smith and Sara Howser had 13 assists and three blocks, respectively.

Archbishop Murphy improves to 4-0 in league and overall, while Cedarcrest falls to 2-2, 3-2. The victory will be of significant importance when district seeding comes around since Archbishop Murphy and Cedarcrest are the top two respectively ranked 2A teams in the Cascade Conference.

Cedarcrest 3, Granite Falls 0: At Duvall, Shannon Bailey, with 17 kills and four aces, helped Cedarcrest (2-1 league, 3-1 overall) to the 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 Cascade Conference win over Granite Falls (1-2, 1-2). Other notable players for Cedarcrest were Sara Houser (eight kills), Jessica Knoth (seven kills) and Lindsey Smith (24 assists). Audrey Murphy led Granite Falls with nine kills.

Prep volleyball: Bailey's 25 kills help Cedarcrest topple South Whidbey 3-1

LANGLEY -- Christine Hillestad has high expectations for her Cedarcrest volleyball team.

A year after placing fifth at the 2A District 1 tournament and barely missing a chance at a state berth, the Red Wolves head coach says her team is, "hunting towards that again."

The Red Wolves (2-0 in league and overall) made a small step towards Hillestad's goal with a 25-12, 15-25, 25-23, 25-16 victory over South Whidbey Thursday night in a Cascade Conference match at South Whidbey High School.

"My expectations are high for us, not making state didn't sit well with me," Hillestad said.

Shannon Bailey had 25 kills, Lindsey Smith added 41 assists and Sara Houser had nine kills and four aces, two coming in the game four clincher to lead the Red Wolves.

Cedarcrest bounced back from a game two loss to defeat South Whidbey (1-1) 25-23 in the third game.

"We had some unforced errors and cut down on those, in the third game," Hillestad said.

Houser served 11 of Cedarcrest's 25 game four points.
