The SFAA offers both slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball in different age groups. Outlined below are the different programs offered to South Fayette girls.
Ages 6 & under:
Girls that are 5 and 6 years old play in our co-ed Tee Ball league. Since the boy's cut-off age is July 31, we do allow girls that turn 5 before this date to play Tee-ball. We do not allow any children that turn 5 after July 31 to play in Tee-ball.
Ages 8 & under:
Girls that are seven or eight years old by December 31, 2001 play in an in-house coach pitch softball league. All teams compete against each other but league records are not kept. At season's end, an in-house tournament is held.
Ages 9 & older:
Girls that are nine and older have the option of playing either slow-pitch OR fast-pitch softball (you may not play both in the same season). Slow pitch softball has slower high-arc pitching and plays by traditional softball rules (i.e. no stealing, no bunting, etc.). Fast-pitch softball is a "flat pitch" and the pitching gets progressively faster as you move into the older age groups. Fast pitch softball allows stealing but lead-offs are not permitted.
Many parents ask which type of softball they should sign their daughters up for. This can be a tough decision but it is generally recommended that you sign up for Fast-pitch if your daughter is considering playing High School softball. Since it is tough to know this at age 9 or 10, we recommend that you try fast-pitch at this level for a year and see if your daughter enjoys it.
Please Note: from year to year, the number and type of softball teams will vary on the number of girls registered. It is possible that in a given year, we may not have enough girls to field a team in the division you signed up for. If this occurs, you will be called and given the option to move a team in the other division or you may request a refund. Requests for refunds must be made prior to the SFAA ordering team uniforms (usually the first week of March).
