Straight A meets the grade
Sixteen contestants arrived in Delton, Michigan to strive for that A ranking at the regional meet hosted by SMASH. Rescheduled to Saturday, September 20, & Sunday, September 21st due to eight inches of rain the previous weekend.. Saturdays weather was sunny with some thermals, Sunday was overcast and a little windy. Located at Prairieville Farms/Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame the event had a number of interesting flights.
Rockets of the World, 4th Edition
The newest edition of Rockets of the World is here! Peter Alway`s seminal work on rockets is in it`s fourth edition, with no major changes from the last edition. Hard-back, 384 pages with over 200 versions of 138 rockets from 14 countries. This edition does not include the data from the Rockets of the World Supplements that are issued each year.

Events:
Space Systems (28) WOW what a great event to show off your modeling skills. A good number of models were entered in this event.
A Helicopter Multi Round (24)
There were a lot of good flights mostly on Saturday with the thermals firing.
A Cluster Altitude (16) A lot of people are getting this event down as altitudes peak.
Open Spot Landing (4) Who ever heard of 3 spot landing events in one competition. All 3 spot sites were about 100 meters from the pads.
Parachute Spot Landing (4)
Streamer Spot Landing (4) Newcomer Tyler Triomstra has a 3 meter streamer flight.

Sport Launch October 11th and 25th
Saturday October 11th and 25th Smash will be hosting a sport launch at the Farmers Hall of Fame located at 7990 Milo Rd. Delton. Good days are dwindling for flying so take advantage of these next 2 launches. Guests need only rockets and motors. There are enough launch pads for everyone. An FAA waiver will be filed for 7000' AGL from 1-6pm
SMASH honored with Award for Outreach to Community
The 2008 NAR Section Recognition Awards have been awarded to the small, medium, and large-sized sections which documented the best achievements in each of three categories in 2007-2008: membership growth (especially growth in NAR members); service to current members through section activities; and outreach to promote sport rocketry to the community. Each of the three winning sections in each category will receive a $25 cash prize from the NAR Section Activities Committee in recognition for their achievement. The NAR Board of Trustees congratulates the winners and thanks them for their achievements.
Sections are broken into 3 sizes, over the last year SMASH membership has risen placing the section in the large category of more than 60 members. SMASH has 61 members.

SMASH has been very involved in community support hosting and participating in many community events each year. SMASH is involved with the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo every year with displays, presentations and demonstration Launches. At least 2 churches gain volunteers to assit their church launch, this would be 2nd Byron Church and White Pines both in the Grand Rapids area. Numerious schools including Ostego, Battle Creek and Muskegon. Sponsorship with 3 TARC teams in 2008, Hosting NARAM-49 and all of the launches at the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame that are open to the public.
