Keeping the same wallpaper background I have had up all school year, I developed an anti-soft drink message based on an issue brief from the New Hampshire Health Professionals for Healthy School Nutrition. On the left is Aggie, my personal school health mascot. She is holding a bottled soft drink, and the sign over her head reads, "The Fats of Life". In the center is a stack of soft drink cans and bottles (I searched for imges of soft drinks using Google, printed several copies of a 5 can lineup I found, and created the stack effect). The overlaying black symbol was drawn on with a magic marker. "The Facts of Life" on the right side are also from the issue brief. They read:
Over consumption of soft drinks is associated with obesity, overweight children, osteoporosis, Type II diabetes and risk of tooth decay
An "extra" 100 calories a day, which is less than one 12-ounce can of soda, can lead to a weight gain of 10 pounds in one year. Overweight youth do get more calories from soft drinks than normal weight youth.
Sugar from soft drinks combines with bacteria in your mouth to form acid with every sip that is taken. Each acid attack lasts 20 minutes and starts over with each sip. This acid, plus the acid in the soft drink attacks the teeth increasing the risk of decay.
Studies show that teenage girls drinking 2 cans of soda a day have a higher rate of bone fractures.
I used clip art softdrink bottle caps as bullets for the messages. One of my sixth grade classes plans to add to this board. The teacher brought in some cola and a student donated a tooth that had fallen out. The tooth is quickly decomposing, becoming pitted and discolored, and they offered to add this to the facts list.
