Stream Management
Ft. Patrick Henry Tailwater
Ft. Patrick Henry Dam impounds a small reservoir (895-acre Ft. Patrick Henry Lake) on the South Fork of the Holston River in Kingsport (Sullivan County).  Downstream of the dam, the river flows through urban and industrial settings unlike most Tennessee tailwaters.  The upper 2.9 miles of the Ft. Patrick Henry tailwater is managed as a put-and-take and put-and-grow trout fishery by annually stocking catchable and fingerling rainbow trout and sub-adult (6-7 inch) brown trout.  About 45,600 trout are stocked annually.

Ft. Patrick Henry is Region IV’s smallest and probably most obscure tailwater trout fishery, although it appears to have a comparatively unique potential for producing exceptionally large and well-conditioned trout.  This offers anglers the opportunity to catch trophy-sized fish, such as the 15.56-lb. rainbow trout that held the state record for this species during part of 2002.
