Every year, a lucky few VFMC members travel to Long Pond Pennsylvania to drive the North course of Pocono International Raceway. If you haven't tried this, you don't know what you're missing! This event happens every Fall and is run by The Bayshore Corvair Club . Take it from a guy that usually only races in a straight line, this is incredible... |

Veteran Pocono racer Jack O'Donnell brought his lowered, GT40-enhanced 1995 convertible... |
Ultra-serious semi-professional VFMC member Steve Trevisan used his Steeda-suspensioned, Vortech-blown 1997 Cobra to straighten the curves... |
Steve's million-dollar suspension (nothing is stock) and special road racing slicks helped this Cobra navigate the corners at over 100 mph with no problem... |
Both Jack and Karen O'Donnell took turns piloting the '95 thru the turns.... ....the family that races together, stays together! |
I've been drag racing my ' 93 GT for years, this was the first time that racing required turning for me. I had a blast! In my opinion, this kind of racing beats drag racing hands down! |
If you're a "first-timer" you automatically are placed in "D" class with other beginners. It was a great way to learn, but even though I enjoyed speeds well over 100 and 5000 rpms, I'd like to move up to "C" or even "B" soon. Racing in "D" class was as hard as driving to work in the morning, but without the traffic lights... |
This is something drag racing does not have, enclosed garages to "pit" in.
These were great! It was a way to get out of the sun, to let the engine cool, to do repairs if needed and eat and drink.
Space is limited and I recommend getting there early for this luxury... |
Jack and Karen's ' 95, complete with vinyl race numbers is equipped with a lowering kit, light bar and GT40 Heads and intake. Jack also invested in racing tires to keep the vert planted.
Jack raced in "B" class while Karen jumped behind the wheel in "D" class... |
My number 00 enjoyed it's temporary garage. I've decided to invest in the stylish vinyl numbers and give the white shoe polish a rest. And I know I'll eventually be adding road racing slicks to my tire collection next to my snow tires and drag radials... |
Member Rick Andrews arrived with his 1970 Boss 302 ready to make up for last year, which ended early due to mechanical problems...well fate dumped on Rick again and the Boss shredded a distributor gear after only 4 times around the track...
3rd time's the charm Rick! |
"A" class superstar Steve Trevisan was the perfect example of what to do and how to do it on a track like Pocono.
I'd like to thank Steve for all the instruction on "taking your line" and tire roll, tire pressure and passing rules and practices. |
Ya gotta love a pretty women in a helmet in a fast, loud car! Karen did a great job racing no matter what hubby Jack thinks. I think Karen also deserves a promotion to a higher class... |
The longest part of your day (in your mind) is waiting to get back out on that track...this is one addictive little activity... |
Yes, once again it's time for the Webmaster's self-indulgent artsy photo - sorry folks.
This event happens every September, so keep an eye on our newsletter and club website for dates and info. |
