The Volvo 240/245 series was designed in the 70s, as such they are noisy (240) or noisier (245) there were some improvements over the years and the early '90s ones were not bad I hear. There is much you can do to reduce the road noise if you want to spend a few $$ and some time. This is a wagon but these tricks will work on sedans with great results also. |

This is what Volvo put under that broken down foam, not very much. Adding some dynomat clone (mastic) McMaster Carr part # 9709T19 or the Viscoelastic McMaster Carr part #9709T26 will deaden the bad vibrations, on this page I show the process on my 245 project along with a few other sound proofing tricks. As you can see there is a bunch of bare metal, bare metal = vibration, vibration = noise! |

This is the front drivers side, old dried up matting and more bare metal. |

I went with the Visco' mats from McMaster, they were more expensive but the DLF (sound deadening rating) was 30% higher, I used the mastic on my '88 and '85 turbo it worked well but since this is a wagon I wanted all the help I could get. Here you see it covering the back shelf under the seat. |

Drivers side, every bit of bare metal gets a piece. The passenger's side got the same treatment. |

This is some foam we use at work to quiet down AC ducting and chillers. I cut it to match the old broken down foam mats, I also extended it a bit where the factory mats didn't cover. |

Here it is installed, note I did not stop where the factory mats did. I left the space under the rails for the seats bare other than that the whole floor got covered. |

Here is the ultimate secret, under dash mats from a diesel!!! These make a hell of a difference. The passenger's side needs a bit of trimming to fit. I'll be doing the cargo compartment next, stay tuned. |
