What I'm trying to do here is pass along some of the things I've discovered about the realys used in the '80s 240 and  740 Volvo cars.   I have found the high amp relays that are on the drivers side fender of the earlier 240s are great for upgrading the lighting, and if you are in a U-Pull yard looking for a fuel pump relay for your 740 one from a post '86 240 will do just fine, the AW-70/71 relays are interchangable between 240s and 740/60s as well.

These are the relays I'm talking about in the pages on lighting.   They can be found on the drivers side fender of the older (pre '86) 240 series or in the relay/fuse tray in the 700 series.

1. Bosch # 0 332 204 110 This is a 20/30 amp 12V relay that is found in later 240s on the                      fender, not really usefull for lighting as it just switches power between the 87 and 87a            terminals with no "off" position.
2. Bosch # 0 332 015 012  This is a 2 X 15 amp relay found in some pre '86 240s and some               700s, it is one of the good relays for upgrading headlights or a set ofrunning fogs.                    When it is energized both the 87 & 87b terminals get power and when off neither has              power.
3. Bosch # 0 332 015 006 Same as #2, earlier version?
4. This one is found in 700s, as the pic shows it is rated at 40 amps, it also has the 2                        switched terminals making it good for lighting upgrades.  It has 1 259 925-2 on the side          with 6807 below.  There is a similar one that has the 87/87a terminal setup like #1

87b
Here is a bottom view of one of the #2 relays.
The terninals are:
85. To ground.
86. Signal from switch.
30. Power from battery or alternator.
87 & 87b Power out to lights.

All the relays have the same terminal layout, #1 has the 87a terminal instead of 87b,
#3 is the same as #2
#4 has no 87b, both output terminals are 87.

These are 3 of the early fuel relays, pre '86.
The early and late (white) relays are NOT interchangable!!!
1. Number 89 61 60, 12V/30A  No other part number, This relay is the one I replaced the                                           16A one in my 240T with.  Relays like this are ~ $1.50 in the local Pick and Pulls.
2. Number 1 348 600 (also has  89 83 26) 12V/16A This is a common relay in most early               240s, rated at 16 amps I replaced mine with one of the 30 amp relays just as                         insurance, figuring they would be more robust.
3. Number 1 324 978 (also has 1 324 978) If I remember right this is an early relay.

All of the above relays are interchangable, if you are 'yarding looking for a replacement, I'd look for the latest date code I could find in a 12V/30A relay.   Remember, if your relay had a meltdown look for the cause first, replacing a 16A with a 30A is not going to help if you have excessive current draw.  It may cause major problems!!!

Please note, I've seen different applications listed for each of these part numbers.  I have used the 12V/30A one with no problems, if in doubt use the one that is right for your car.

Late fuel relays, post '86 240s, all 740/60s.  Found down by the passengers feet in the 240s, and in the left side of the relay tray in 700s.  These are NOT interchangable with the early relays.

1. The numbers on this one are: 89 6399 and 1347 603, date code of 21. 04. 86 found in an           '86 240.
2. The numbers on this one are: 89 8151 and 35 23 608, date code of 03. 04. 95 found in an            '85 740.
3. This has the same numbers as #2, it has a date code of 05. 06. 90 it was found in an                   '87 240.

Again if you are 'yarding looking for a spare relay just look in both 240s and 700s for the latest date code you can find, they are all interchangable.
Here's the last of the relays I've messed with, the OD relay for AW 70/71 equiped cars. the one on the left is the later relay, and the one on the right is the old number.  These can be found in 1985 and newer, 240s and 700s and are the same relay in either car.

In 240s pull the glove box and look just inside to the left behind the vent area.
In 700s pull the ashtray and look in the fuse/relay tray in back on the right.

These do not have any date codes that I can see so just get the cleanest/newest looking one with the late numbers you can find.
Late OD relays
This is a relay from the pre '85 automatic box 240s and 700s, number 1307793, no update on later part numbers.
