She Found her Thumb

In my last post, I mentioned that Kimberly has started putting her hands in her mouth, her blanket in her mouth, basically anything she can grab. She would suck on her fist, or sometimes her thumb and her index finger (she usually hooks her index finger over her thumb, so they just go in together).

Last night, I put her down at 8:30, and I went back in at 11:00 to feed her before I went to bed. I snuck to the edge of her crib.........and she had her thumb, and only her thumb, in her mouth. Her other four fingers were spread out, not in a fist, but she had only her thumb in her mouth. I watched her for a couple of minutes, eventually the thumb fell out, and when she tried to get it back, the index finger had hooked over, and so they both went in.

We're gearing up for the drive tonight - I figure I'll give her a bath, dress her in her PJ's, let her nurse, then hit the road. It should be that time of night where she'd sleep a good chunk, so we might make it to Lodi without too many stops. Then, it's up early in the morning to continue on to Chico.

Tuesdays with Kimberly

Yeah! It's Tuesday. I'm back at work now, in my second week. I've gone back 32 hours a week (Tuesday and Friday I only work until noon). So far, it's been great. I LOVE the daycare provider I found - I just can't say enough good stuff about her. Every day we go there and Kimberly is happy and smiling, I love it.

The day before we started there, Kirsten called me and asked me to bring a picture of our family because she bought a playmat for Kimberly to use, and there was a plastic sleeve to put a picture in. I thought that was awesome of her to think of us! Yesterday she called me at 10 just to tell me that Kimberly was sleeping in a pack & play. Last week, she would only nap in the swing, she wouldn't go in another room and nap in the pack & play. But yesterday...Success!

Kimberly is "talking" up a storm. If you stand her up on your lap, she just babbles and babbles, and she loves it when you talk back to her. Our conversations are usually something like:

Dad: How was your day?
Kimberly: AaaaaaBaaaBaaa
Dad: Did you have fun at daycare?
Kimberly: BaaaaMaaaaDaaaa
Dad: Did you learn new stuff?
Kimberly: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa - MaaaaMaaaaaaaaMaaaaaaaaa - Aaaaaaaaaaaa - Daaaaaaaa - Baaaaaaaa

What else is she doing????? She is grabbing for her blanket and putting it in her mouth, finding her fingers and putting them in her mouth. Grabbing at toys that hang above her. Oh yeah, she LOVES the remote control. I don't know why exactly, but she was staring at it for a couple of days, so we finally put it in front of her. She likes to run her hands over it - I think she likes the bumps of the different numbers.

This weekend will be our first road trip with the whole family. We are trekking up to Chico for Memorial Day weekend. Originally we were going for an engagement party. Now we are going for a family gathering, and also for my Grandma's funeral. There will be a lot of new people for Kimberly to meet!

Why Cameras are Important

I just want to preface this by saying - I'm not a bad Mom - I promise. Things happen when you don 't expect them. Sometimes they are funny, sometimes scary, sometimes sad, sometimes extra cute. For the funny and extra cute, it's important to have a camera handy. There have been a couple of times where there was a great picture I wanted to take of Kimberly, but the camera was upstairs, or in the other room, or hidden in the bottom of a bag in a safe place where I would definitely remember it....but forgot. So now, I usually keep the camera on the counter in the kitchen, or in the front pocket of the diaper bag (if we're going out).

On Tuesday, something funny happened. Kimberly was laying on the couch, sucking on her pacifier, and she started screaming! I looked over, and saw that somehow the pacifier had levitated out of her mouth, and was balanced on her nose**.

Luckily, I knew exactly where the camera was!

If this had happened 2 years from now, she would be saying, "Mommy! Mommy! MOMMY! Look what I did!"

But right now, it was just frustrating.

**No Kimberlies were hurt in the taking of these pictures. The whole episode lasted about 45 seconds, and then she was back to sucking on her pacifier.
