Wow, what an awesome informative site!!!!!! I was researching gambian rats and your pics and information about Stormy came up, and then of course I was hooked! I have had ratties since I was 4 years old and have never been without them. Unfortunatly I have only one little one left, her name is Littlest Black One and she 2 years and 8 months old with a nasty groin tumor. She is still active and is such a character. She had many tumors removed, her parents were pet shop rats whose sole purpose in life was to breed, very sad :(! I live in Cape Town South Africa were owning or being owned by ratties has never really taken off, its more of a fashion statement sadly. I think most rats in South Africa are breed for snake food and science research. Thank you for your great site and sharing your cute little ones and extremely helpfull information!!!

Hi there, It is good to see so many of us who love our little friends, great site too, very informative and I am finding a lot of links to some very good websites about rats. Anyway, we have 2 female white rats who are just very cheeky, my young son brought one home after school one day with the usual "I will look after it", "sure thing" I said with all insincerity. Well it looks like the rat had found a place in my heart, so I bought another rat to keep this one company. hehe Anyway keep up the good work. Scotty Sunshine Cost QLD, Australia.

After doing many searches on the web looking for a site that covered a wide range of info on rat care, I was more thrilled to find this site! I found it many months ago but forgot to bookmark the site. After bookmarking it and being thrilled that I FINALLY found it again....my computers hard drive toook a nose dive losing all info including the bookmarked sites! UGH! well its obvious I discovered it once again and even if I dont bookmark it....I know how to find it now that I know the author is part of the RMCA site as well! I self educated about rats which in turn has helped me get my foot in the door at the ER clinic here in town where the vets are totally in the dark about rat care. They know the basics from what one vet described to me as their 10 minute pocket pet lesson they get while attending school to become a DVM. The rest they claim, is up to them how far they decide to go as far as learning about "POCKET PETS" That analogy bothers me too.....like they are disposable pets or something! The wonderful vets at our ER clinic want to learn more about rats and have admitted to me that one vet there belongs to a pay site for licensed vets that they refer to when someone comes in with a pet rat or other small animal that has an ailment that is not within their usual common ailments they treat. The vets there were unaware that a rats tail may deglove easily and you are never to grab them and pick them up that way. Some were not aware that rats cannot vomit (one vet didnt believe me and challenged me when he looked it up...LOL!) Anyhow....I provided them with loads of info and also gave them this websites address. Two days later I was called on the phone and asked to come in to go over a necropsy report on one of my rats that passed a few weeks back. I was thanked again and again for giving them the address to this site. It was a major asset to the ER staff and hopefully the vets there will realize that rats can be treated for a wide range of illnesses. One vet there did not even know that rats brux and eye boggle when happy. He thought it was some sort of seizure type movemennt! LOL! Our rats deserve the best medical care possible. More and more people own rats but few want to spend money on their medical care. I think that is why vets are not as educated on them for that fact right there. after spending nearly $2000 on two of my sick boys at the ER vets (they had pnemonia and needed oxygen and daily injecttions so they had to stay there. After that costly ordeal I bought my own oxygen generator and that made a huge difference! Anyhow the vets said....lets face it....few people would spend that kind of money on pocket pets. I said....PLEASE....no more referring to them as pocket pets. I dont know about your rats...but mine have not been able to fit in my pocket since they were babies! Thank you ALL of you for this site. Forgive my many typos. My keyboard on my laptop is on its last leg and has a mind of its ownn!

Hi everyone!! I dont have a rat yet but i am about to get one. I am helping out a teacher at my school and she has two pet rats that she sometimes brings to school with her and I reallllly enjoy them! Then one day a couple weeks ago, she told me that she was going to get me a special treat for helping her out. Then she said i would make an excellent rat parent and that she would buy me one! I am sooo excited!! I think i am seriously ready for my first (and probably not my last!)rat. The true test will be if my dog Copper is okay with them(I plan to let him meet Mrs. Driskill's rats later on this week). I have already chosen 2 names for my rat: Tucker or Jinko. Wish me luck!
