Just trying to find info on our upcoming 20th high school reunion next year, and came across this site. Any other 1986 alumni out there? I see Rick Knapp is in Iraq. Todd Giglio was in NYC for a while pursuing acting and music, now resides in White Plains NY with a wife and 1 son, and another on the way. Jack Bush is in Colorado, and I seem to have lost touch with most others. I live in Maryland with a wife and 1 daughter. My day job is middle management at a print firm, and on the side I write/illustrate comic books and have done some filmmaking. website: http://www.timespell.com

Sending along my condolences to the McCormick family concerning the recent loss of their father Jack. I don't think any of us who grew up in Canisteo in the 70's didn't spend at least an evening in that loft or playing cards in the house and were made to feel at home. That's a testiment to your father and how he raised you. My deepest sorrows Donnie, Lisa and Liz.

But there is always next year. My time is almost up in Okinawa, Japan. Time flies when you are enjoying yourself. I hope all is well in the Canisteo Valley and that the football team is doing GREAT. I have alot of great memories of Canisteo. The turkey path, Tony's ,the park, the old stores(theres nothing like them now). The drug store that had the peanuts that were kept warm. Also when I first seen the little troll dolls in a store window.Had to have one!I can go on and on.It was great.I wounder if the high school looks the same and the elementary school's look the same.

Hi Harkey, Just a quick note from an old friend, with fond memories. I remember you as that great looking guy with a quick witty comment, great smile, and a wonderful personality with many a joke and prank . The park and many afternoons we would all meet to catch up on whats up or make plans for the next event. Fun memories with Nate, Duncan, Karen, Chris, and infamous others. Many a rode trip , and good time. My Prayers are with you Harkey, for strength, and spiritual peace. Hope to see you when I get back up to Hornell. Take care, old friend Darlene.

That's wonderful news Colleen that you are able to spring Harkey for a trip. I am sure anyplace you take him will be a treat. I would guess a drive over Fall Creek/Bearlick Hollow and or Bush Hill with the beautiful Fall colors would spawn some great memories. If he doesn't smile then ask him about the parties up there where he rode his Suzuki. I think most of us have fond memories of those times and places. He couldn't sneak in though, we always heard that bike long before he got there. Harkey it has been too many years since we last were in the same place. I for sure haven't forgot the fun times though. Some of the crazy stuff we did will be in my memory forever. If I was sure the statue of limitations was expired I'd mention a few, but you know the stuff I am talking about. Kids being kids! Remember building seats out of boulders over behind the Rotary Field? Why I have no idea? I guess because we had nothing else to do. You hang in there Harkey. I know you still have that good heart and I for one have not forgot the times when both our hearts were younger and minds were crazy. Whoo Hoo! PBR and Genny Cream Ale!

I spent the first 21 yrs of my life living in and around the canisteo Valley.I have many wonderful memories of building forts in the woods, playing in the giant sand piles at the county barns and all the great games like kick the can, release and hide and seek. That was back when a neighborhood was safe and everyone on a street knew their neighbors better yet the whole town knew everyone.I have lived here in the South now for 7 yrs and miss home.My Grandmother wrote in a rememberance book for my son that she had lived all over this country but nothing compared to the beauty that the Canisteo Valley has.The distictive seasons....the smells of fall with the leaves falling'the smell of wood stoves in the winter the first robin in the spring and the smell of everything blooming in the air in the summer.I never really understood it until I moved away.i can only hope that one day my children can experiance what it is like to grow up in a small town.To know what it is like to be safe to live where you never had to lock your doors at night and you could walk around and not worry about strangers or of being shot.I hope to return someday soon to the Valley and give them the taste of my childhood.

Your post is Very LeMonesque Darlene. You eloquently hit the nail on the head. Iżd love to add to that thought, but you said it so well I canżt! I will question though the part where you said, "It may not be where we need to be now in our lives." I would offer the argument that each and every one of us who moved away need to be in Canisteo and would be none the worse for wear had we remained. Perhaps less traveled and maybe holding fewer coins in out pockets, but certainly the village would have taken care of us well had we stayed. I know I need to be there, but have become addicted to not. Devil at work? Perhaps.

You know the ties are strong of Canisteo, for those of us who have moved on. Great roots were forged which bring us back to find strengh and reguvenation when visiting . Those of us who have moved on can say our experience while in that village helped shape who we are today. The success we share started in that valley. The saying :It takes a village to raise a child: is so appropriate don't you think? Any bad memories slip away to reveal only the best of that little town. It may not be where we need to be now in our lives, but we sure enjoy the memories.

It was me that said canisteo is a great place to be from. i so love to visit and have fond memories flood my brain. i also know that many try and keep the place alive!.my feeling is that, it's just the fond memories of " home" that we try to hold onto.i guess since i have kids and they've been able to experience so much more , from california, kansas and kentucky to toronto, aruba and PA. there is nothing there for our young people. to retire there is wonderful, it's a beautiful place without a doubt. and i will always call the canisteo valley my first home.

It isn't too many posts below (8/27) that I told a little story about Miss Rifenberg. Not sure what the confusion is. Also, I had a chance to speak with Bill Pullman last week at a screening of his new film. He had quite a chuckle over the idea of his barn being called the Redneck Theater. He could have been pulling my leg, but he claims he is restoring the barn because he likes barns and that it will be a dance studio for his wife who teaches dance. The wedding reception was just for one of the workers who was having a wedding in his family. I had a nice visit with Bob Miller (Class of '70)last week who was out in this area visting his son at college. He is still in perfect running shape and I wouldn't be surprised if he could run a 1:58 880 right now (of course, it's called the 800 meters these days, but back then........) Jon

Yes, Bald Eagles in Steuben County!! A pair of them living in the Almond Dam area. I did some camping at the Almond Dam over the summer and saw them soring over head and sitting on dead trees by the State route 21 side of the Dam. It is a great site to see for sure.

Very well stated Robert. I find it interesting you made a trip all the way to Canisteo to buy a dog. Perhaps an excuse to drive the village in autumn? It has to be just beautiful back there by now. A bald eagle in Stueben County? Hmmm... they are truthfully very vile creatures. I got to see a few up in Alaska and the stench by their nests was horrid. Very magestic in flight however. Alan not sure where you read an alum not wanting to return to Kanogy? It might be here and I missed it, but like you I can not fathom such a thing.

I need to check in here more often. Somebody says that Canisteo is not a place to move back to. I've wanted to for quite some time. Who knows, maybe next year will be the year. It'll be 30 years after I left. I recall when the Gores were married, but don't recall her maiden name. My yearbooks are at my mother's house, I won't be able to look at them for a couple months yet. And I recall Mr. Goreman's chess playing abilities. Of the 40 games I played him, I won 3.

drove down to canisteo the other day, to buy a dog, and saw a large black bird soaring above north hornell. not far from the old ponce de leon, where we had our 10-year reunion. as it turned in the afternoon light i could see that its tail was white, so i pulled over to take a picture. turning more, i could see its white head. a bald eagle flying free and wild above the canisteo valley. i stood there for 15 minutes until it was out of sight. then i checked on the dog and drove on through canisteo, zig-zagging from street to street to see how things were. then i drove out willow bend road and turned up toward carson, stopping where colonel bill's creek flows into the river to climb down the bank and skip rocks across the water with a couple of my daughters. no point in any of this, except that canisteo remains the magical place it always was for us.

Nice pics of "the barn"! It certainly doesn't appear ready to fall down anymore. Looks like a fine spot to rejoice and celebrate the de-flowering of a virgin. OOOPs too crude. Looks like a fine spot to gather and celebrate the union of man and wife. Good job whoever did the craftsmanship. That stonework would cost a small fortune alone out here in the land of glitter and lights.

Saturday, I opened the Canisteo site for the 1st time in quite a while. I was shocked...LOL...to see that the Canisteo living sign had been replaced by one that Paul Dean made. Having a son in Afghanistan, that truly touched my heart. Mitch just returned to Kandahar 9/7 after being home 2 weeks for R & R. Then, to hear Patty Black sing "Thanks Again", which Paul wrote, I was smiling, yet near tears. As someone said on his site, it's obvious that she poured her heart into that song. I saw the Aaron Tippin concert on 9/11, and, he is awesome. But, we, who have our roots in Canisteo, should be very proud of the talent around us. Needless to say, I am very impressed with our local talent. :D

Tom De Wall (some sort of Town or Village Supervisor for Hartsville) owned the barn and the grocery next door. He was apparently going to down the barn. Bill, who's place is walking distance away, urged Tom to do something - anything - but knock it down. Bill bought the place, and having architecture background plus a true love for barns, has put just enough money in to revitalize it. Amish, and local, and very much done by Tom DeWall. The place will be a community center for Hartsville. The Fall Wedding is for family friends of DeWall. I know it will take several summers to transform the site, I will take some pictures.

Thanks for the information on the barn, seems like alot of money to be dumped into renovation for dance lessons, and a wedding though? I wish him the best in his venture, but am skeptical at the very least. I do wish a village store made its way back to the valley though. It was so covenient for the essentials. Time will tell...
